Questions & Answers

Grout where tile meets bathtub

I've been told 2 different things with regards to what to use where the porcelain tile meets the bathtub. We'll be purchasing Fawn grout. Is it recommended to grout where it meets the bathtub or use the matching silicone caulk (sanded vs silicone?)?
Asked by: Nick
You should always caulk wear two different surfaces or planes meet. When the bathtub is full it will weigh more and will be a hair farther from the tiles. Grout is rigid And will not flex with this very slight movement. Eventually it will crack and crumble. It looks great at first but it won't last.

Should you use sanded grout for glass tiles on a wall?

Asked by: Dee
It depends on how wide the grout line is. If it is wider than 3/16", then yes. If not..then no.

if i use this in my shower do i have to put a sealer on after it dries

Asked by: westpenn1
I'm not a tile expert...but from my research, you should use a good sealer on the grout if it is going to be in a shower.

What is the correct amount of water to the 7lb bag? The 1 pint of water to 7 lb of sanded grout bag has to be off. The grout was like crumbs. I ended up adding more water to get a better consistency.
Asked by: KB
Grout mixing is an art, relative humidity can change the amount of water needed. The pint is a good guess, but start with 1/2 pint and gradually mix in more to the right consistency. There is no set formula. Mixing more water in as needed is correct.

The color was a pretty good match to the color on the box. It was easy to mix using a drill with a mixing tool on the end. I used the bottle of sealant that is mixed with the grout at first and it was little thick so I added a little more water and it went on with ease. The box is only 7 lbs and it covered only 2 of the 3 walls in my shower. I did not want to get the big bag because I know it would be too much so I had to go back and get another box because I needed just a half of box to finish the grouting job. I've used Poylblend in the past and never had a problem with it. Good product.

The open time in a 76 degree room with A/C running was about an hour. I was grouting natural slate tile with 1/4" joints; I had pre-sealed the tile to make the grout easier to clean off and had no problem with grout haze. The only problem was that the color was MUCH lighter than this color sample on the website and on the manufacturer's brochure in the store. I had tried another gray that looked promising---too light. Then I tried "charcoal" which a lot of people in the Q&A said was dark gray---it was black in my opinion. I wanted something pretty close to the color of the dark gray slate. I did mix a small sample of each first but in the end I just gave up trying to get what I really wanted since I had a deadline for finishing the floor. I can live with it but it's a shame that they can't get the color samples closer! There's no need for them to be so far off. A little--sure. WAY off--no. I will add a closeup image of my finished floor with a bit of something solidly black in the corner to give perspective.

Not much more to said about it. I have used this brand for years and have no complaints with the product at all. HOWEVER, the packaging is another story. I do a lot of repair work as a handyman. And it really bothers me to see so much of any product go to waste. This particular purchase was no exception. Probably 95% went unused. I only needed about 1/2 cup to do the job. And I usually see similar results on other jobs as well. I used to find white/unsanded grout in a 1 pound box, which was great for tub/shower repairs. Can't find that anymore, either. Again, the product is exactly what you would expect it to be. I would just like to see some more practical packaging.

It's a good product but Home depot tends to over price many of their products, some more than others. It could be priced at much less, however it works well. I have had some bad experiences with some of their grout that had been on the shelf for over a year as the grout didn't stay hard and could become scraped away to powder easily. So make sure it hasn't been on the shelf too long.

Did re-grout of two bathrooms that have small white tiles and the walls look sparkling new. Small package is sufficient to cover one to three, probably more, small bathrooms. Make sure to use the non-sanded grout unless you're (re)grouting joints larger than 1/8".

Rated 5 out of 5 by from grout Mixed easy and smooth. Color was consistent. Easy to spread and pack. Cleaned up well using three passes on natural stones with plenty of irregularities. Kept it moist for a few days after cleaning so it will last. Sealed a week later color still even.

Mixed easily without lumps; consistent powder texture; stayed plastic long enough in the mixing trough to allow adequate time to apply; easily smoothed in crevices; looked dark when applied, but dried to the expected color after 48 hours. Good stuff.

I made bonsai pots out of it and they turned out really great in shape and strength. I would recommend this if you want to be creative and make your own size pots.
