Customer Questions & Answers

Sanded or not, and does it need sealing

I didn't see anything on the container about this grout being sanded, but the specs here on the home depot page say it is sanded. I'm curious as generally, sanded is for 1/8" and greater, yet this says it can be used for 1/16" to 1/2". So, 1st question is it sanded, and if so then why is it OK to use on 1/16", which is the gap between my shower tiles. 2nd question does it need to be sealed? I've already purchased this (it was recommended by the Home Depot advisor in store) and was ready to grout tomorrow and while waiting read about it being sanded.

The container does say it is sanded in the area where it says " USES: Simple Grout is a sanded mix " first few words.

is this product mold resistant, and is it ok to use on the shower walls ?

Not for shower walks. This is sanded grout. You'll need to mix dry non sanded grout for walls in shower.

Is this grout sanded or unsanded?

It doesn't specify on the container or in the description of the product whether it's sanded or unsanded. I understand sanded grout will scratch glass tiles such as a backsplash and I am looking for unsanded grout for that reason.
Asked by: DDAWG
This grout is sanded and thick. It is very difficult to work with and leaves a gritty haze.

SimpleGrout #333 Alabaster 1 Qt. Pre-Mixed Grout is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 322.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very poor grout I had a small entry way that I needed to finish before the water was turned on at my new place. Without water on site, I decided to try this premixed grout in a small 1 quart container. I've done a fair amount of tile work over the years, probably about 800 square feet, and I've always mixed my own grout for the job. This was my first experience with a premix and if this product is any indication of the quality, I will never use premix again. This stuff is over-sanded and way too dry a mix. It doesn't fill voids very well and is absolutely horrible when it comes to clean up. It sets up too fast, so you are forced to work very small areas and clean up with your sponge way too quickly. It leaves a rough, unattractive grout line. In my opinion, the people who give this product a high rating are inexperienced and haven't used good grout before.

We used an 1/8th inch grout line, which this heavily sanded grout appeared to fill without issue. The grout also wiped off of the vinyl tile without staining or discoloring the tiles, but you needed to work in a small area as this grout appears to dry much faster than the traditional unmixed grouts. It is important to note that this product is not true to the color label pictured on the container. When wet the grout does appear to be a bright snow white, however once the grout dries the color becomes more of a light tan or off-white. For some installs this might not be a problem, however against the bright white of our tiles it causes the grout to appear dirty despite being brand new.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Hate this stuff! As someone who has worked with grout more times than I can count, I would never buy this again. It dries so fast that you have to have two people--one person to place grout and one right behind to wipe. It dried so fast all over our LVT and was impossible to remove the residue. Left major haze and we are experienced grouters.

I used the grout to touch up bathroom floor grout that had been covered by carpet for at least 18 years. When the carpet was removed, there were a number of chipped away grout spots on an irregular small tile pattern floor. The tiles ranged from 1" square to 2" x 1" rectangles. The grout patched them perfectly. I did prep the floor with Zep's grout cleaner before the touch up. Both products worked very well and I recommend them.

It is actually a dirty gray color. I applied it, stupidly thinking that it would lighten as it dries. It doesn't. It stays gray. So, I will need to remove all of this gray grout and purchase a white product. Additionally, it is difficult to work with.

In my opinion, even though it is more convenient, it is harder to use than grout I’ve mixed myself. It is not as self-adhesive as grout I’ve mixed myself and has kind of a crumbly texture. It is also harder to clean up and does not wipe off the tile easily. It does not press easily into back-splash 1/16” grout lines. For larger grout lines on a horizontal surface, I expect it works pretty well. Not so much with narrow grout lines on a vertical surface.
