Do I have to grout if it's only being used as a backsplash?

Asked by: Emmakim
Yes, you do not want any moisture getting in between the tile this will cause mold to grow.

How successful on showers?

Description states okay for showers, but then also notes not good for areas that get wet. Which is it as I have 3 walls needing to be completed this week in my master bath shower, using 12x12 tiles. Thank you.
Asked by: FirstTimeTiler
Would not recommend for shower unless it is above water line. Should use sealed backerboard, mortar, and grout

The idea sounded good at the time of purchase. The directions were followed to the letter, even watched a youtube video. Put the tiles up one day and the next morning half of them came right off the wall. I contacted the manufacturer and his advice was "The way you fix this is you can use glass tile premium thin set mortar, spread the mortar directly over the Simple Mat. Or you can use a blow dryer or heat gun to pull the Simple Mat off the wall." Seriously? Put thin set mortar over the mat? What's the point of the mat then? They did not offer a refund or anything. It's impossible to return it since it's stuck to the wall. This was a total waste of money and especially our time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Product - Read This Review Regarding Other People's Tiles Falling Off I love this stuff. I know there are a lot of bad reviews about tiles not sticking and falling off the walls, but I have used this a few times around the house and I have had no issues at all. I installed a tile back splash 3 years ago and it is still rock solid. It leaves me to believe that the issue with the tiles are user error. Here are a few tips for a flawless result: 1) Clean the wall prior to putting this stuff on your walls (once it is on...it isn't coming off easy). 2) Roll it on the wall per the instructions, get out all air bubbles and do not expose the adhesive until you are ready to tile on it. Make sure you overlap the seems. 3) Install the tiles and make sure you press firmly on them with the float multiple times throughout the process. The tiles will really stick to the wall, but some will pop out just a little...push them in and put firm pressure on your tile. Once you grout the tiles will not move. 3) After tiling everything GROUT THE SAME DAY!!!!! I cannot stress this enough. If you read everyone's reviews of the tile falling off the wall it is mostly because they waited to grout until the next day and the tiles fell off overnight. Grouting will firm up everything and it will keep the air from potentially drying out the adhesive. The tiles WILL NOT FALL OFF if you press everything firm to the wall and grout immediately after tiling. I hope you enjoy your project! As I said before I have used this a few times and I have had nothing but fantastic results.

Unfortunately, we had a million small cuts to make over and around outlets. Once the wet saw was used, the tiles did NOT stick to it. At first we just dried them with a towel. Then we laid them out in the sun awhile. Then, we used a hair dryer, and finally, we just used some mastic, because they were that un-stickable. Our experience caused a lot more time than necessary. Our rental of the wet saw went from a 4 hour rental to a 6 hour rental (Home Depot charged me for a whole day), and we will had to use mastic. Not necessarily worth our time. We would not use it again.

This stuff is STICKY. In fact this was my issue with it. It was so sticky it was incredibly difficult to cut. It stuck to the scissors, to me, to itself, to the counter, etc. Trying to cut a hole to go around an outlet was torture. Even my razor knife would not cut through the gooey part! It was not nearly as easy to use as I had anticipated. If you do choose to use it, I will give you one tip...use a small piece of the mat to get the good off your scissors. It works much better than trying to wash it off.

I found that these could have potential for certain applications. I would only use these on very smooth surfaces, where there are little to no seams. I used them for a shower wall and I don't think I would recommend this for future application. I will say the tiles seem to be adhering and none of the tiles have fallen, but it's only been a few weeks. I would also suggest using these in small locations. Once in place you only have 24 hours to place your grout. However, the tiles will start to sag if they are on a vertical surfaces over that long time span. I think this would be best used for a small backsplash or similar type application. I would not use this for larger projects.

The problem with this product is if you do not grout right away the tiles sometimes fall odd the wall. I used very thin glass tiles and so far two sections fell off the wall. I still have two more areas that need grout, and I am hoping that they stay up until I can grout. If you do a small area and immediately grout, the product is just OK. You are just better off using thin-set mortar. The second stage of my tiling project will be with thin set. I am hoping that the grouted tiles will remain up. Time will tell.

It sticks to itself and the front of the square ceramic tiles, but not to the tile board or back of the tiles. They just flopped right over, only sticking to the bit where the glazed section met the adhesive. I ran back to HD, got the adhesive I should have gotten in the first place and had them up in 15 minutes. Complete waste of time and money.

Would not cut with scissors nor a box knife. Impossible to get it to stick without wrinkles. Impossible to go around electrical outlets due to it being difficult to cut. Far more complex then just using mortar. We actually returned this and bought mortar and things went smoothly after that. This was a huge waste of time.
