Customer Questions & Answers

Can you use this Thinset for 12x24 porcelain tile?

Asked by: Porkchop
Not recommended for anything over 8"x 8" due to long drying times. The manufacturer recommends a full 72 hours for 8"x 8", There are reports of this material not setting up for weeks on larger tiles on set on non-porous surfaces.

May I use it for shower wall or the wall surronding the bathtub?

I am trying to remodel the shower room, and want to use this pre-mix thin-set mortar, but HOME DEPOT workers said this pre-mix mortar can't be used for shower wall at all, because it will peel out after some time with steam. I get confused now. The instruction on the bucket of pre-mix thin-set mortar clearly shows that it is suitable for wet area like shower wall and walls surrounding bathtub. I have to ask you for a clear answer.
Asked by: david
I would not recommend this on any environment that is damp. This is not a portland cement product, and constant moisture will soften it, and the tile will eventually come up.

Can this be used to adhere the backerboard to a plywood subfloor?

Asked by: Scott
Tried putting down Red Guard to a plywood subfloor and not only did it not dry after 3 days, it soaked the Red Guard so much it was unusable. Go with dry mortar or you will be doing the job twice.

Will this adhesive work for installing ceramic tile over an existing ceramic tile floor?

Asked by: homeDIY
I know I'm a little late to the party, but despite what the product specs say this product should not be used on floors. Contrary to the name, this product is NOT a thinset, but rather a mastic. We asked a Custom representative why they call it a thinset mortar rather than a mastic, and they said that it was because people "recognize the name thinset better". Seems a bit dishonest to me, but that's how it is. This product should be treated like a mastic. When used on tiles larger than a few inches, dry time increases SIGNIFICANTLY, since mastic dries as opposed to thinset which SETS (and will even do so underwater - you can use thinset to replace popped tiles inside of filled pools). The air that dries the adhesive mostly comes in from the grout lines. Larger tiles, fewer grout lines, longer dry time. By that same token, you must wait significantly longer than with thinset to grout, since if you don't it'll take even longer to dry.

SimpleSet Gray 3-1/2 Gal. Pre-Mixed Thin-Set Mortar is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 72.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dont waste your money! We have done multiple tiling jobs both in our own home and family's homes. Typically we go with a self mix product however thought since it was a small job we would make our lives easier and go with premixed. It has been over TWO WEEKS and we are now ripping out all of the tile... It never dried! Not even on a tile that was 3"x3"! So in short you will be redoing the job if you go with this product, don't waste your time or money.

It should be illegal to call it thinset on the packaging because it is NOT thinset. Thinset has Portland cement in it, which means you cannot premix it. DO NOT USE THIS ON FLOORS...this product is a mastic, which will not allow you to set tile height in the mortar bed. Tiles will sink into a bed of mastic, and there is nothing you can do about it. True thinset allows you to set tile height in the mortar bed. I did half a floor with material, and now I have lipping issues on the tile I just set, thanks to believing this is real thinset. I switched to a standard unmodified thinset and had FAR better results for my application. This container will only cover half of what it says it does, so plan accordingly. I am very frustrated that THD even sells this terribly misreprented product in their stores, and their floor department people actually recommended it to me for 12" x 12" tiles....it took a full week for this stuff to dry on a second floor porous concrete slab. Do not plan on finishing the job in a weekend.

It's been over a decade since last laying tile and we thought we'd save some time using the pre-mixed, would not do that again. The biggest problem for us was in the inconsistency in the product from bucket to bucket. We ended up using more that we thought we would and discovered that one bucket would be fine and the next would be really dry and extremely hard to apply, to a point where we finally took one back to the store because it just didn't seem right. The response we got made us think this probably happens often. When you are in the middle of a project and moving along, the last thing you want is to have to stop and go back to the store to return something. This variation in texture, dryness, thickness of product made it a challenge to get tiles nice and level on a concrete floor in good shape. We looked at the higher cost as a dollar per hour convenience exchange, but in the end, we spent more time and money. Wouldn't recommend unless you were doing something where consistency doesn't matter and variations in tile/product you are laying actually adds to the character. Fingers crossed as the tiles finish completely drying that it doesn't get worse.
