Customer Questions & Answers

Can this be used to adhere the backerboard to a plywood subfloor?

Asked by: Scott
Tried putting down Red Guard to a plywood subfloor and not only did it not dry after 3 days, it soaked the Red Guard so much it was unusable. Go with dry mortar or you will be doing the job twice.

Will this adhesive work for installing ceramic tile over an existing ceramic tile floor?

Asked by: homeDIY
I know I'm a little late to the party, but despite what the product specs say this product should not be used on floors. Contrary to the name, this product is NOT a thinset, but rather a mastic. We asked a Custom representative why they call it a thinset mortar rather than a mastic, and they said that it was because people "recognize the name thinset better". Seems a bit dishonest to me, but that's how it is. This product should be treated like a mastic. When used on tiles larger than a few inches, dry time increases SIGNIFICANTLY, since mastic dries as opposed to thinset which SETS (and will even do so underwater - you can use thinset to replace popped tiles inside of filled pools). The air that dries the adhesive mostly comes in from the grout lines. Larger tiles, fewer grout lines, longer dry time. By that same token, you must wait significantly longer than with thinset to grout, since if you don't it'll take even longer to dry.

Can you use this Thinset for 12x24 porcelain tile?

Asked by: Porkchop
No. It does not dry effectively. I would only use this on small wall tiles. Learned the hard way unfortunately.

SimpleSet Gray 3-1/2 Gal. Pre-Mixed Thin-Set Mortar is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 64.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from No problems whatsoever. Worked perfectly! Despite all the complaints about product 'never' drying etc. etc., we had absolutely no problems with it. As do-it-our-selfers we did a tub surround, the bathroom floor and the laundry room floor with perfect results. Mortar stuck tight, dried quickly even with 18" x 18" tiles used and was easy to work with. No problems whatsoever. Worked perfectly!

Used Red Guard as the underlayment following the instructions of mortar, Red Guard, mortar, then tile and it didn't work. Red Guard is so wet that it has pulled away from the mortar on the floor, causing the grout lines to crack. 3 days of dry time and I can literally pull up every tile with a scraper and both the mortar under the tile and the mortar under the Red Guard are still wet. So wet the plywood floor is soaked like a wet toothpick. Do not waste your money. Good news is I took the empty bucket back, and the remainder of the Red Guard and Home Depot gave me a refund for both. Bought both bag mortar and Wonderboard with rock screws and am now going to have to pull everything up and relay it the traditional way. At least it's still wet and I can reuse the tile. What a mess.

Set up time extremely slow. 2 days for large format tile, but 5 to 7 days for the mosaic strip that scented the other tiles. Mosaic was thinner and had to lay thicker mortar to level mosaic. Took forever... Talked to some pros, who said they NEVER buy premixed for that very reason. Will always use bags that you mix yourself from now on. lesson learned.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Home Depot Wedsite wrongly graded product - Employees said same in stores Website says it is rated for exterior use and local Home Depot employees at 2 different store said the same thing about product and exterior grade rating - End result 30 hours of labor wasted installing and then removing and cleaning tile Cannot trust Home Depot employees or Web Sit manager to know anything about their products

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes life easier Easy to spread. Dries faster to help tile from sliding or shifting. Used 1 bucket to lay over 110+ 12" tile. No rush on it drying out while laying tile or having to keep mixing it like regular mortar when you need more. Just simply open the bucket and ready to go. Little pricy but worth the money.

It's been over a decade since last laying tile and we thought we'd save some time using the pre-mixed, would not do that again. The biggest problem for us was in the inconsistency in the product from bucket to bucket. We ended up using more that we thought we would and discovered that one bucket would be fine and the next would be really dry and extremely hard to apply, to a point where we finally took one back to the store because it just didn't seem right. The response we got made us think this probably happens often. When you are in the middle of a project and moving along, the last thing you want is to have to stop and go back to the store to return something. This variation in texture, dryness, thickness of product made it a challenge to get tiles nice and level on a concrete floor in good shape. We looked at the higher cost as a dollar per hour convenience exchange, but in the end, we spent more time and money. Wouldn't recommend unless you were doing something where consistency doesn't matter and variations in tile/product you are laying actually adds to the character. Fingers crossed as the tiles finish completely drying that it doesn't get worse.
