We asked a Custom representative why they call it a thinset mortar rather than a mastic, and they said that it was because people "recognize the name thinset better". Seems a bit dishonest to me, but that's how it is. This product should be treated like a mastic. When used on tiles larger than a few inches, dry time increases SIGNIFICANTLY, since mastic dries as opposed to thinset which SETS (and will even do so underwater - you can use thinset to replace popped tiles inside of filled pools). The air that dries the adhesive mostly comes in from the grout lines. Larger tiles, fewer grout lines, longer dry time. By that same token, you must wait significantly longer than with thinset to grout, since if you don't it'll take even longer to dry. Read Less

Answer:
No. This product is a mastic, NOT a thinset mortar (despite what the description and packaging state). Mastic needs air to dry. It takes weeks to dry under 12"x12"; I wouldn't be surprised if it hasn't dried after MONTHS under 3'x5' backerboard.
You want to use a powdered, bagged thinset mortar to adhere backerboard along with backerboard screws.

It of course depends on how thick of a coat you put on and how well you take care of the product when not in use. I used approximately one and a half 3 and a half gallon buckets to do a room 14 ft x 14 ft.

Answer:
The coverage on any setting material is based on the size of tile you are setting. There is a material calculator on our website custombuildingproducts.com or you can contact our technical service department at 800 272-8786 option 2 for further information. Unfortunately without knowing the size of your tile i cannot give an accurate answer.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by No problems whatsoever. Worked perfectly! Despite all the complaints about product 'never' drying etc. etc., we had absolutely no problems with it. As do-it-our-selfers we did a tub surround, the bathroom floor and the laundry room floor with perfect results. Mortar stuck tight, dried quickly even with 18" x 18" tiles used and was easy to work with. No problems whatsoever. Worked perfectly! September 4, 2016
