Can I use this particular mortar for stone veneer on hardibacker board? Does it also make for a good scratch coat?
Asked by: Higgins
I use it frequently to attach hardibacker (in conjunction with backer screws). I have not personally used it to install stone veneer, however I have used it to install ceramic stone. It is excellent from the ease of use and also very stable.

Gray or White?

This mortar comes in gray or white. Can anyone explain to me why you would use one color over the other? Thank you,
Asked by: ImBlue
the gray is as its natural color, whereas the white is bleached (not like the table top bleach, just the process) which makes it cost a tad bit more. the white is recommend for your glass and light colored mosaics and tile. pretty much, If you are using any light colored tile OR grout, you want to use the white. if you use the gray, you are running the risk of the grey bleeding through the tile and grout

Depends on the product you are installing but I usually figure between 55and 65 square feet per bag. So it will take 2 bags.

Is this good for use on 12"x24" ceramic tile on a shower wall over hardie board?

I am not sure if I should use adhesive or thinset on the shower walls.
Asked by: Sparky
DO NOT USE ADHESIVE!!!!! Only use Thinset on any tile unless you are doing a backsplash or something small. Mastic or Adhesive will fail, especially in a wet area. Your better option would be the Versabond LFT because your tile has a side longer than 15". The LFT will be stiffer thus supplying more grip and stick when you put it on the wall. Also please make sure you waterproof your shower. Just using hardie board is not the way to go. Check out the waterproofing systems and follow instructions to a T. It's worth the small investment and time vs having to rip it all out and start from scratch. Check out the JohnBridge dot com website as well. There is a ton of great info on everything related to tiling that you could ever need to know.

I compare the consistency to pancake batter, its self leveling, very long working time, no shrinkage and the bond phenomenal. Clean up is quick, easy and no stains left behind. Highly recommend completing all clean up within 24Hrs to avoid the use of a chisel. I used the product to repair my Porch I poured directly on top of clay brick that was detererioating and extremely uneven, mixed by hand in 5gal pails poured it let stand 5 minutes appeared level laid porcelain tile, It was that easy I could not believe it.

Seemed to dry solid and served well as a leveling agent when installing tile. Mixing as the instructions (adding the powder to the water) as indicated on the bag was a challenge and resulted in large lumps in the mix. I would recommend the reverse (pour powder into the bucket first) and add water and mix till the desired consistency.

I use it for my stone veneer project (outdoor kitchen) and it works just great. Contractor may consider it too expensive but for DIY it's just perfect, you save a lot of money anyway so paying a little extra for convenience is OK. Excellent adhesion, very easy to work with so saves you a lot of time and headaches.

Very forgiving if it is mixed a little to thin, or a little to thick. I have never had a tile come loose that was installed properly. Heck i have one tile that flexes and I still can't get it to come up, so I can redo it.

I would have returned the bag but my tile guy didn't tell me until the job was done and I was expectiing there to be at least a half bag left to do a small table project. Quality check.

I mixed about 1/3 at a time which gave me about 45 minutes to work with each batch. Consistency of product is uniform and high quality. A good experience using VersaBond. Now I need Bengay for the soreness of making a brick wall my age!

The stuff is VERY thick when you go to mix it up. I have a pretty heavy duty old Milwaukee drill that I put a mixing blade on, and it was struggling to mix the mortar up completely. Does the job makes for a good bond.

Easy to use mix wait 5 miniutes mix and put it on with a notched trowel. Much better job than using sand underneath. This way when the water from the gulf comes in and goes over the docks the pavers will not budge .
