can this be used as a backer for tile backsplash?

Asked by: Anonymous
The tile should have at lease 1/2" of support. If there is drywall in good condition you can tile right to the drywall. If it has some problems use the 1/4" tile board over the drwall. If the drywall is very bad you should use the 1/2" to get good support.

is this Backer Board needed as a subfloor for ceramic tile installation in a kitchen

I'm taking up Parqua wood flooring (installed on top of my subfloor) in order to install new ceramic tile in our kitchen. I need to know if I need to replace my flooring with backer board prior to ceramic tile installation
Asked by: Anonymous
The thinset used in tile installation will adhere to wood or backer board. The subfloor should be at least 1 1/4" thick to avoid popping off the tiles. That typically means 3/4" subfloor and 1/2" backer board. Used Hardi backer in 8' sheets to cover the entire floor. If the parquet floor is well attached to the subfloor you could add 1/4" hardi backer, or if it's really attached well, tile right over the parquet.

Considering the amount of work and expense involved in doing tile, do yourself a favor and buy a better quality product such as Ultrabacker or HardieBacker. It is full of air voids and falls apart easily. Difficult to make clean cuts due to the crumbly nature of the product and screws tend to pull thru rather than pull the panel securely to the substrate. Thicker than other 1/4 products as well, probably due to the air voids. I had 50 sheets delivered when the supplier ran out of Ultrabacker, but returned 48 of them and sent an expediter to another store to get more Ultrabacker.

It is crumbly and of inconsistent density. It will leave crumbled, crunchy bits between the board and your subfloor. Doesn't hold screws worth a darn. Some won't seat and some pull all the way through. Some will just push right through the board before you even trigger your screw gun. I've had decent luck with the old style, but this stuff is garbage.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lightweight and fairly easy to install, but cutting wasn't so easy I think I would not use this backboard again. When you cut it, there are little bead of cement that come out. It causes the board to fall apart in places. Its fine if you use the whole board or large cuts but small cuts are not so easy and even though it says lifetime warranty, Im not so sure.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for curved surfaces I recommend this for curved surfaces, or when you need thin strips for window sill or shower alcove. For flat surfaces, I prefer the hardi backer, it will give better strength. First thing I learned, is this is extremely easy to score and snap. You can accurately cut this into 2" strips. If you try to do this with hardi backer, it will not snap along the line. The second thing I learned, is that the 1/4" wonder board is very flexible and bends into a smooth curve. It will make cracking noises, but it maintains its strength. I had a difficult tile job, I framed the shower ceiling as a groin vault. This is like a barrel vault, but in two directions. I typically use hardi backer, but it is not flexible. I thought my only alternative was a Kerdi or Wedi board that costs about $200 per sheet. Luckily I went to Home Depot and tested out the flexibility of the wonder board and was quite surprised. It will bend just as well as the alternatives and is much less expensive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use and handle. I ordered 31 sheets online, figuring 30 sheets based on square footage of ceramic tile installation plus one for any damage or mistakes. I took advantage of quantity discount, too. Home Depot had it all stacked and waiting when I arrived to pick it up. I loaded it myself a couple sheets at a time in the back of a Suburban with no trouble. I was able to keep the shipping pallet for unloading when I got home, which worked extremely well. It is easy to cut with a sturdy box-cutter knife, but you will go thru blades depending on how many cuts you have. I ended up with very little scrap from the 30 sheets, so I still have one sheet left over. I used the Rock-On #9 x 1-1/4" screws and they set down nice. This was much easier to use versus 1/2" thick cement board. Good product and good results.
