Stud location and brackets?

Unfortunately my bathroom studs are 24" on center can I use horizontal bracketing and fasten to both studs and brackets. How far apart for brackets if so? I appreciate your help . Good stuff.

Can Wonder board be stacked two deep?

Replacing a 1" Gyp-Crete floor in a small bathroom ~30sf. From the OSB to the bottom edge of the drywall is about 1.25 inches. Would it be acceptable to thinset, then stack two Wonder boards? I'd prefer to use this product than self-leveling concrete.
Asked by: HomeOwner
We would not recommend double-stacking WonderBoard Lite Backer Board. You can double the plywood and then install a single sheet of Wonder Board Lite. For further assistance please contact our installation division at 800.272.8786 option 2

can i use wonder board instead of wire mesh and thin set for out side walls for cultured stone

Asked by: coco
Yes. Wonderboard is made from cement and can handle being soaked in water. Water that gets in will evaporate out. Use decking screws which are slower to rust.

1.) Part of where I am installing WonderBoard Lite on a plywood floor as a base for new tiles is only 33" wide wall to wall ... would it be better to use a singe piece 33" wide here or use two adjacent pieces say 16.25" wide so as to create a joint? 2.) The house I am working on is an early 1980s modular house where the floor consists of a single piece of 3/4" plywood with tight joints (no gaps) with the ends and sides nailed directly into the floor joists ... should I disregard the installation instruction to sawcut joints through the plywood? I believe doing this would structurally weaken the plywood floor Thank you

can you apply tiles onto wonderboard with type 1 tile adhesive?

I have been told both that the type 1 adhesive can be used on wonderboard and also that the pre mix adhesive cannot be used , that I have to use thin set mortar to apply the tiles. I would really appreciate a clear answer to this as I have the adhesive but can return it and get the mortar thanks for any help
Asked by: zak6
Hey zak6, The rule of thumb with any mortar or mastic that is pre-mixed is that it is suitable ONLY for vertical surfaces. If you are using this for a wall, then make sure whatever adhesive used dries completely. It's not so much it's going over the backerboard, which is suitable, but the drying time that needs to be allowed. For the best adhesive for any floor or wall, you can use thin-set mortar mixed with water (which dries stronger and faster than pre-mixed versions) that is linked below. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Custom-Building-Products-Marble-Granite-and-Travertine-White-50-lb-Premium-Medium-Bed-Mortar-MGMM50/100154560 It's strong enough for all tiles and applications. I'd also recommend it for all tiles being installed vertically or horizontally. Joseph

WonderBoard Lite 5 ft. x 3 ft. x 7/16 in. Backer Board is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really pleased with this! A friend had recommended wonderboard to me & I couldn't be happier that I went with it! It's so easy to score & snap, & although it took someone other than me to place them (I'm on the short side), it was easy for them to place & install each board. No issues at all with using the Rock-On #9 x 1-1/4 in. Phillips High Low Threaded Wafer-Head Cement Board Screws, they went in like butter, but feel very secure. 4 stars for appearance, I mean, it's cement board, it's not pretty. 4 stars for ease of installation because it's as tall as I am, & I couldn't lift it, place it & screw it down myself, but for the Boys who are bigger & stronger than me, it was a snap. Some people have complained of the chemical smell. We could definitely smell it when we brought it in, but, it sat for a few days in the bathroom before we installed it (maybe between 4-6 days) & by the time we were ready to install it, we couldn't discern any lingering scent.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not very durable Used this product because Home Depot was out of the Hardibacker. Corners damage very easily. Be very careful of crushing around the perimeter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very easy to use, light enough for one person to install Used this as the drywall for a bathtub/shower enclosure walls with great results. It is very easy to cut and shape using a standard utility knife and light enough for one person to hang. The blade on the utility knife was dull after cutting about 5 sheets but that is to be expected. A couple of tips I discovered while doing this job may be helpful to other users: 1. I used a cordless hammer drill on low speed to set the cement board screws. The hammer drill made the screws bite more easily into the backer board particularly around the edges where the backer board material is harder. 2. I used an oscillating saw with a Dremel 1/16" grout removal blade to cut the square hole I needed for the shower niche. Very little dust and the carbide blade made cutting the backer board with a clean, straight edge very easy. 3. For the cut outs around the shower control and faucet/shower head, I used a Rotozip tile cutting bit which had no trouble plunge cutting the backer board and giving me tidy holes that fit straight over the shower fittings first time. We stapled a plastic vapor barrier underneath the backer board for extra protection before installing the backer board and we plan to finish the job off with Red Gard to waterproof the backer board before tiling.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect product for the DIYers I recently renovated a basement bathroom. I removed an old fiberglass shower stall and move a few doors and a few walls... an almost total redesign and renovation. I have used backerboard before but not Wonderboard and not this light weight product. Let me tell you, cutting and shaping is definitely a Wonder. This stuff is very forgiving for the novice and easily manipulated by the expert (I fall somewhere in between). A good product for a good price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light weight makes it easy to handle and install Wonderboard Lite was so easy to install. I never saw it used before and was surprised what a great product it was. So easy to score it and snap off what isn't needed to fit any spot.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lite board is not better The lighter board is easier to handle only because of the weight. It works, but as you lift it and move it around it bends, flexes, and you can hear the concrete crunching into pieces inside the mesh. When you put screws through it, the board is less solid and the screw has less to grab, very unforgiving of too much screw torque, more likely to punch a hole with the screw head. This board flexes after you get it up on the stud wall. More importantly, you are probably matching 5/8 inch sheetrock at the borders, so thinner 7/16 inch wonder board does not match, creating an elevation difference. I will never use the lite stuff again, strongly recommend to use the heavier original wonder board.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy Install / add RedGard sealant to ensure full water proofing Very easy to install, worked well as backer board for shower. Recommend using RedGard sealant to ensure 100% water tight seal. Much lighter than regular DuRock / Cement Board
