Answer:
You can screw it directly to the studs and water proof it with a coat of Red Gard for added protection after it has been hung. Or in our case, we stapled some heavy duty polythene to the studs before installing the backer board and we plan to coat it with Red Gard too.

Answer:
Yes. Wonderboard is made from cement and can handle being soaked in water. Water that gets in will evaporate out. Use decking screws which are slower to rust.

Answer:
Yes. Wonderboard is cement board and can handle water. I found it to be a good board to use in general. It's very solid and takes screws without crumbling or punching through. That can be a problem with low quality cement boards. It keeps a flat shape under screws and doesn't bow out from the pressure. Best board out there where water exposure is an issue.

I am installing ceramic tile over oak flooring, but I want to put Wonderboard over the flooring before I lay the tile. Do I need to apply thinset before I put down the Wonderboard? What kind of screws should I use to fasten the Wonderboard to the wood flooring? What would be the spacing of the screws?

It can handle unlimited water itself but it's not a water barrier. Water can soak in without damaging it and then evaporates away when it's vertical on a wall, but it still needs a water barrier behind it if it's on wood (for example in a shower when it's against the shower frame). If your floors can be sanded and refinished, it may end up being less expensive than tiling and a real wood floor will raise the value of your home. Read Less

Rated 4.1 out of 5 by 10 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Really pleased with this! A friend had recommended wonderboard to me & I couldn't be happier that I went with it! It's so easy to score & snap, & although it took someone other than me to place them (I'm on the short side), it was easy for them to place & install each board. No issues at all with using the Rock-On #9 x 1-1/4 in. Phillips High Low Threaded Wafer-Head Cement Board Screws, they went in like butter, but feel very secure. 4 stars for appearance, I mean, it's cement board, it's not pretty. 4 stars for ease of installation because it's as tall as I am, & I couldn't lift it, place it & screw it down myself, but for the Boys who are bigger & stronger than me, it was a snap. Some people have complained of the chemical smell. We could definitely smell it when we brought it in, but, it sat for a few days in the bathroom before we installed it (maybe between 4-6 days) & by the time we were ready to install it, we couldn't discern any lingering scent. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very easy to work with. Good in wet areas Very happy with product. Ive tried many boards and wonderboard has been my favorite February 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very easy to use, light enough for one person to install Used this as the drywall for a bathtub/shower enclosure walls with great results. It is very easy to cut and shape using a standard utility knife and light enough for one person to hang. The blade on the utility knife was dull after cutting about 5 sheets but that is to be expected. A couple of tips I discovered while doing this job may be helpful to other users: 1. I used a cordless hammer drill on low speed to set the cement board screws. The hammer drill made the screws bite more easily into the backer board particularly around the edges where the backer board material is harder. 2. I used an oscillating saw with a Dremel 1/16" grout removal blade to cut the square hole I needed for the shower niche. Very little dust and the carbide blade made cutting the backer board with a clean, straight edge very easy. 3. For the cut outs around the shower control and faucet/shower head, I used a Rotozip tile cutting bit which had no trouble plunge cutting the backer board and giving me tidy holes that fit straight over the shower fittings first time. We stapled a plastic vapor barrier underneath the backer board for extra protection before installing the backer board and we plan to finish the job off with Red Gard to waterproof the backer board before tiling. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Light weight makes it easy to handle and install Wonderboard Lite was so easy to install. I never saw it used before and was surprised what a great product it was. So easy to score it and snap off what isn't needed to fit any spot. January 2, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Lite board is not better The lighter board is easier to handle only because of the weight. It works, but as you lift it and move it around it bends, flexes, and you can hear the concrete crunching into pieces inside the mesh. When you put screws through it, the board is less solid and the screw has less to grab, very unforgiving of too much screw torque, more likely to punch a hole with the screw head. This board flexes after you get it up on the stud wall. More importantly, you are probably matching 5/8 inch sheetrock at the borders, so thinner 7/16 inch wonder board does not match, creating an elevation difference. I will never use the lite stuff again, strongly recommend to use the heavier original wonder board. June 10, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not very durable Used this product because Home Depot was out of the Hardibacker. Corners damage very easily. Be very careful of crushing around the perimeter. September 9, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect product for the DIYers I recently renovated a basement bathroom. I removed an old fiberglass shower stall and move a few doors and a few walls... an almost total redesign and renovation. I have used backerboard before but not Wonderboard and not this light weight product. Let me tell you, cutting and shaping is definitely a Wonder. This stuff is very forgiving for the novice and easily manipulated by the expert (I fall somewhere in between). A good product for a good price. November 29, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Easy Install / add RedGard sealant to ensure full water proofing Very easy to install, worked well as backer board for shower. Recommend using RedGard sealant to ensure 100% water tight seal. Much lighter than regular DuRock / Cement Board September 3, 2014
