When the Wonderboard butts up against sheet rock in bathroom. What do you use to tape and bed the seams. ?
Asked by: DJ
No tape, remember most finished installs have baseboard or tile, or carpet . That covers the gap

Does wonder board lite need to be water proofed with Red Guard before applying tile in a shower area?
Asked by: Tyler
Yes. Tile thin set, grout and the cement based backer are all water permeable. The backer board should be waterproofed with Red Guard or similar product.

Does wonder board need a backing material when applied to interior walls, or can it be screwed directly to the studs?

Asked by: Glennster
You can screw it directly to the studs and water proof it with a coat of Red Gard for added protection after it has been hung. Or in our case, we stapled some heavy duty polythene to the studs before installing the backer board and we plan to coat it with Red Gard too.

can i use wonder board instead of wire mesh and thin set for out side walls for cultured stone

Asked by: coco
Yes. Wonderboard is made from cement and can handle being soaked in water. Water that gets in will evaporate out. Use decking screws which are slower to rust.

WonderBoard Lite 5 ft. x 3 ft. x 7/16 in. Backer Board is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't use it. You'll be sorry I am a "semi-professional" tile installer. Have completed over 25 jobs of varying size and difficulty. Many requiring backer boards. I just completed my first installation using Wonderboard. Previously only used Hardie backer board. Wonderboard is garbage in comparison. Must be cut with angle grinder with masonry blade due to fiber that binds the whole mess together. Crumbles when cut and makes a horrible mess. Joints between boards are not level next to each other. Screws often bore completely through the board. Don't use it!! Pay the extra dollar or two for Hardie backer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good So far so good. Easy to work with and cut. First time installing tile/ backer board. Installed in our basement shower and I did it all by myself didn't need help. Did leave a mess but what doesn't when your doing construction.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really pleased with this! A friend had recommended wonderboard to me & I couldn't be happier that I went with it! It's so easy to score & snap, & although it took someone other than me to place them (I'm on the short side), it was easy for them to place & install each board. No issues at all with using the Rock-On #9 x 1-1/4 in. Phillips High Low Threaded Wafer-Head Cement Board Screws, they went in like butter, but feel very secure. 4 stars for appearance, I mean, it's cement board, it's not pretty. 4 stars for ease of installation because it's as tall as I am, & I couldn't lift it, place it & screw it down myself, but for the Boys who are bigger & stronger than me, it was a snap. Some people have complained of the chemical smell. We could definitely smell it when we brought it in, but, it sat for a few days in the bathroom before we installed it (maybe between 4-6 days) & by the time we were ready to install it, we couldn't discern any lingering scent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect product for the DIYers I recently renovated a basement bathroom. I removed an old fiberglass shower stall and move a few doors and a few walls... an almost total redesign and renovation. I have used backerboard before but not Wonderboard and not this light weight product. Let me tell you, cutting and shaping is definitely a Wonder. This stuff is very forgiving for the novice and easily manipulated by the expert (I fall somewhere in between). A good product for a good price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light weight makes it easy to handle and install Wonderboard Lite was so easy to install. I never saw it used before and was surprised what a great product it was. So easy to score it and snap off what isn't needed to fit any spot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very easy to use, light enough for one person to install Used this as the drywall for a bathtub/shower enclosure walls with great results. It is very easy to cut and shape using a standard utility knife and light enough for one person to hang. The blade on the utility knife was dull after cutting about 5 sheets but that is to be expected. A couple of tips I discovered while doing this job may be helpful to other users: 1. I used a cordless hammer drill on low speed to set the cement board screws. The hammer drill made the screws bite more easily into the backer board particularly around the edges where the backer board material is harder. 2. I used an oscillating saw with a Dremel 1/16" grout removal blade to cut the square hole I needed for the shower niche. Very little dust and the carbide blade made cutting the backer board with a clean, straight edge very easy. 3. For the cut outs around the shower control and faucet/shower head, I used a Rotozip tile cutting bit which had no trouble plunge cutting the backer board and giving me tidy holes that fit straight over the shower fittings first time. We stapled a plastic vapor barrier underneath the backer board for extra protection before installing the backer board and we plan to finish the job off with Red Gard to waterproof the backer board before tiling.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lite board is not better The lighter board is easier to handle only because of the weight. It works, but as you lift it and move it around it bends, flexes, and you can hear the concrete crunching into pieces inside the mesh. When you put screws through it, the board is less solid and the screw has less to grab, very unforgiving of too much screw torque, more likely to punch a hole with the screw head. This board flexes after you get it up on the stud wall. More importantly, you are probably matching 5/8 inch sheetrock at the borders, so thinner 7/16 inch wonder board does not match, creating an elevation difference. I will never use the lite stuff again, strongly recommend to use the heavier original wonder board.
