The toilet and flush valve came with the house I bought 3 years ago. I have replaced the flush valve gasket several times because of leaking. This time the gasket will not stay in the groove. It seems that the groove is no longer deep enough to hold the gasket. I must admit I do you drop in bleach tabs and realize that this is the reason for the gasket failures, but can the bleach also erode the hard plastic groove? What are my options? The design is a bit on the Rube Goldberg side.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by pdz The role of this gasket.
After more than a year struggling with my Mansfield tank #163 problems, starting from its toilet handle broken to several new replacement handles very hard to push. Finally when water leaking and very noisy at night happened; the real problem surfaced. After the broken flush valve gasket being replaced, all the problem symptoms gone, including the very hard to push. My suggestion was as long as we saw the toilet handle have starting hard to push symptom; it was time to replace the gasket before the flushing deed came worst.
For the instruction how to install, let it be in the first slot we saw after unscrewing the top and took the tube out. After fitting into the slot, this red gasket should not sit on the black gasket but above it.

This product fits and works just fine but the bleach drop-in tablets make the gasket turn soft and swell. The seal is lost in just two or three months.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by MikeC Simple fix to common problems
This simple part fixed two different problems. One toilet had a slow leak so it was constantly refilling the tank. The other toilet was so hard to flush it felt like the handle might break. This flush valve gasket was the culprit on both toilets. On the leaking toilet the original flush valve gasket was deteriorated to the point where it was not making a good seal and water was leaking. On the other toilet, it was deteriorated to the point where it became concave and was creating a strong vacuum so the flush valve had a hard time breaking the vacuum seal. Simply removed the old gaskets and replaced with the new one and problems solved. These toilets are original to the house when we built it 13 years ago so I have nothing to complain about by spending $1.78 to replace a gasket.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Vith Mansfield Design is horrid
I have replaced the whole flush valve and the seal with Mansfield parts twice and it still leaks at the red seal. I feel the design of the flush valve is just plain bad. I have tested this over a 5 gallon bucket and had enough water in the tank for the weight to push down on the flush valve. It still has a slow leak no matter what Ive tried. Im never using a Mansfield flush valve again doesn't matter if its OEM parts or a different brand such as this. This is the only place I can review without a login...

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Dave easy and cheap repair
This gasket will fix the sticky valve problem and water leakage. Make sure to install in top groove of housing not lower groove. You should be able to spin the gasket around housing after it is in groove properly. A butter knife might help in getting into this groove. Failure to get in top groove will result in water leakage around seal. Complaints of water leakage after installation is probably because of this. This is a very easy fix so don't put it off. Rate of gasket deterioration will depend on your water but replacing it once a year is probably average.

I put this red seal on and I thought this was the problem. The toilet continued to double flush and not seal. When I looked in the tank,I realized the handle was loose, which caused the flush valve to not seal.Make sure the handle is not loose.

One reviewer says this doesn't work on the Mansfield #160, but they must have had a different problem. I have all 160's & two had the hard to flush problem. The flush handle actually broke from it on one of them! I purchased this gasket for all of the toilets & replaced them in less than 15 minutes. It's been months now & still no problem. Easy fix!
