I purchased this product to replace a broken Moen shower knob #96997 for which the current OEM replacement appears to be the #100710 posi-temp one-handle tub and shower knob. Reviews for the Moen part aren’t too great and I can see why. The part relies on a thin piece of plastic inside the knob to turn the water valve. I’m surprised mine didn’t break long ago.
So, I decided to try this metal replacement knob. What could go wrong? It’s made of some kind of cast metal with a shiny chrome finish. All the parts are metal. Unfortunately it has two major faults.
1. The screw that secures the knob to the valve has a hex head. Included in the kit is a hex key for this screw. The problem is the hex key is ever so slightly too small for the screw. If you put any sort of pressure on this combination the key will spin in the screw head making it impossible to tighten it adequately. The included hex key measured 2.7mm. Fortunately I have a hex key set and found that the best fit was 3.0mm. This may sound insignificant but it was the difference between getting this kit to work properly and returning it.
2. The knob itself is threaded to accept the hex head screw. Either the screw is too long or the threaded hole is too short. Take your pick. The screw hole appears to be tapered at the bottom, just a couple of turns too short. Because of this the knob wobbles on the valve shaft. My options were to find a shorter hex screw (good luck on that), use a Dremel to cut off part of the screw, or force the screw into the hole. I decided to do the later as I could put a lot of pressure on it due to having the correct hex key.
Using a drop of WD-40, it worked. I removed the screw and found that there was minor damage to the threads. I then cleaned everything and coated the thread with some thread locker. The knob looks good and works just fine. I’m taking off two stars due to poor quality control. One star for wrong hex key size and one star for improper screw or screw hole length.

This handle is easier to turn than the original Moen shower plastic handle. It was very easy to install the screws but the directions for the allen screw might lead someone to misunderstand where the threads are within the metal handle to shaft adapter. The handle looks nice and should be more durable than the plastic handle that after only 43 years old became became sloppy on the valve shaft.

I was at the store to get my 3rd plastic replacement handle and it occurred to me that I should look for a metal lever replacement instead, and this is the one I found.
Do I love it? No, I wish the "face" of it were more elegant and no so large, and I wish it were stainless steel rather than chrome but it was the only one they had and it is much better than the plastic one that would probably break in a few years anyway.
All in all a good purchase since there wasn't a better alternative.

I love this handle, its heavy duty, yet turns on the faucet with ease.

The cheap plastic round knob that was on the tub was too hard to turn. This metal lever makes it 200% easier. The handle has two different connectors for rotating type or for pulling type. We had to use the screw from the original handle since the one in the package was a little off. Could just be my faucet.

I had to replaced a plastic Moen handle of similar size, shape, and look. This may sound funny but this product is more than needed. It is a solid xhunk of metal. It is significantly heavier than what I replaced and I am sure it was adding unnecessary stress to the valve. I am sure there are great places to use this handle but I opted to return it and get a plastic replacement.
