Answer:
As a general rule, silicone does not adhere well to cementitious substrates such as concrete, mortar and stucco. 100% Silicone Rubber Sealants are also not paintable.

We purchased this clear Silicone caulk to adhere the wing tightly to the body of a large statue of an angel. The slot in the statue body that the peg of the wing fits into fills with a small amount of water and in the winter this water freezes and pushes the wing peg slowly out of its slot over the course of several winters. The wing never drops back into the body between winters. We anticipate that the Silicone will form a "glue" to hold the the wing tight to the body.

In addition we ran a bead of Silicone caulk over the top of now-closed gap between the wing and the body to keep rain and snow out.

We wish to paint the bead of Silicone caulk on the exterior of the statue this summer when we paint the whole statue. Is this caulk paint-able? It does not appear to be, however the written instructions on the outside label are nearly impossible to read due to being very small and very faint on our tubes. Is there a product you can recommend to "prime" the Silicone with if it is not paintable?

Answer:
As is the case with all silicone based sealants chemistries, DAP 100% Silicone Window & Door Sealant is not paintable. There are no primers, paints or other treatments that can be applied which will allow a 100% Silicone based sealant to accept paint or other coatings.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Product Good - Packaging Horrible I have had two of the 2.8 oz tubes of this product. They were purchased at separate times from separate stores. Both tubes have had flat seal at the end of the tube come open. Silicone has spilled everywhere on both occasions. It made a huge mess and slowed down my project. Customers have an expectation that the packaging of this product will work. This was a miserable failure. I will not be purchasing it again. #losingacustomer July 28, 2016
