The majority of my power tools are DeWalt and I have had excellent service from them which influenced my decision to a great degree on the purchase of a replacement mitre saw. There is no question there are many good saws from other manufacturers but for me the choice was clear.
The DW 717 offers very similar cutting capacities and features to the larger 12 inch DW 718 but for a purchase price that is $200.00 less. As well, 10 inch replacement or speciality blades are usually less expensive and more often to be "on sale".
The saw is powerful and accurate (right out of the box) and the slide action is very smooth. The cam lock mitre detent system is the best of any saw I have used. It is solidly built but like any large saw a little on the heavy side.
To use this saw to its full potential it requires a stand. Buy the DW 723 mitre saw stand and you won't be disappointed.

Really fantastic miter saw. I am using extensively for many projects around the house. The laser installed on this saw (extra charge) is a great feature and I love it the most. Donât forget to hook up to the vacuum to reduce dust. Just too bad that the price for this saw went up twice in a past few months.

A new model with some excellant features:
1) A full 14" crosscut capacity at 90 deg.
2) 30 deg angled cuts
Those two features alone make this a great saw. Then add in the soft start, electronic brake and you've got a winner.

I used to have a Ridgid 10" miter saw but returned it and bought this one because of Ridgid's limitations:
- range of angles,
- depth of cut.
You will eventually get into cuts that you need mitre and bevel angles over 45 deg.s. For example, doing something simple such as installing quarter rounds usually requires cuts over 45 degrees because not all corners are true 90.
Also, the sliding feature is a must. It will increase the usefulness of your saw and saves you a lot of time. In comparison, without the sliding feature you will need to take your work to a table saw, say to create a notch. It is much safer and faster to do it on a sliding miter saw.
I use a professional dust collector with this saw, yet about 20% of wood dust is sprayed out. So don't get surprised. This is my solution for the remaining 20% (see picture).
The clamp is also not designed as well as Ridgid's but works if you are patient. I use a pair of Irwin clamps. They save my time and let me do things the built in clamp won't.
I researched extensively to pick this saw. If you are looking for even better quality you should be prepared to pay well over a grand for German brands, such as Festool. This saw is good for 99% of what you will encounter, even in fine carpentry projects.

The saw itself is quite an impressive product. This was a replacement for a really old 10" Dewalt chopsaw - having the blades on hand helped with the decision about the replacement size. Quick and easy setup and operates nicely right out of the box. You're going to want to purchase a better blade (unless all you plan on doing is rough crosscuts. I did purchase the Model D1090 - it'll do the job for my requirements. Just junk the included blade or put it in your cabinet for those days when you are cutting rough wood. In order to use the saw really effectively, one needs the handle mounted LED light and the extensions. The LED is great and worth the extra the extra money. This saw will be used in an enclosed shop so the LED works fine - not sure how it would be in the sunlight. The extensions (Model # DW7080) are another story. They do not install parallel (ie, they don't install level) to the work platform so you need to brace them up. Not a big deal but one would expect some better forethought. The dust collector on the unit could be improved - hook it up to a shop system with some 1.5" ID hose and a reducer and it's passable. In summary, I'm really happy with the saw and the accessories - it will serve me well for years. You really can't go wrong purchasing a quality product in the first place. I've never been disappointed with Dewalt products.
