How do I lock these pliers?

In the review on this product by luchetti1991 from Sante Fe, NM, the reviewer said the "locking mechanism is pretty strange." Maybe I'm an imbecile, but I can't figure out how to lock these pliers. Perhaps mine are bent or broken? Can someone explain how to use the locking feature?

Thanks!

Rated 4.0 out of 5 by 10 reviewers.
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Too bulky The lock is too soft it opens itself on a small pouch or in the pans pocket June 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good Design, Easy to Use The compound action makes cutting wire easier and increases grip when using as needle nose pliers. The rubberized grip is comfortable and well designed. I've only had these pliers for a couple of months, so it remains to be seen how durable it is, especially the locking function and jaws resistance to bending and distortion, but so far, so good. Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by They could be better The opening of the pliers is not wide, which it makes it hard to grip things September 20, 2015

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Loks are better then they are Really nice look and feel to them, but the locking mechanism is pretty strange, but besides that it gets the job done. June 23, 2015

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Work Well Pliers are a little on the heavy side but grip very well & feel good in my hand. January 6, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Not the normal needle nose These are definitely not your typical needle nose plier but they do work. I haven't fully field tested these pliers just yet but messing around with them, here's what I found. Pros and cons- comfortable grips and overall feel. The jaws have an aggressive serration pattern that bit down nicely while twisting two pairs of14/2 romex. Hopefully they'll hold up. The cutter is very sharp however after the very first snip I could see the black oxide finish started to wear. The joining pin has a fair amount of space around it because there's a good amount of tooling oil oozing out. Overall I would recommend these I have fairly small hands I'm not an electrician by trade but while do maintenance and electrical repairs these worked great and saved me a lot of fatigue. I was able to use one tool to change out a switch, they worked great as dedicated strippers and even hooking loops for going around the screws. July 13, 2014
