Can you do more with a table saw or miter saw, as far as DIY home repairs / construction?

Asked by: Susan
At the end of the day, I believe you can do more with a table saw. I highly recommend Dewalt's Compact 10" saws because the overall quality is great, an the number one thing you ask a saw to do - cut straight - they do better than anyone else due to their dual rack and pinion fence. Every other saw I try you have to check the fence for every cut with a square. No so with a Dewalt. That said, the other question is "Do you do more of what a miter saw is better at or what a table saw is better at?" If you are framing a house, clearly a miter saw is a better choice, and a sliding miter saw the best choice, because it handles 2X10 and 2X12 tasks easily. If you are doing finish trim, the nod still goes to the miter saw, but probably not a sliding one. If you are building furniture, or cabinets, or rabbeting out picture frames, then a table saw is really the tool of choice. The correct answer, of course, is to have both. But to pick one you have to favor one type of use over the other. I can cut studs with a table saw, uncomfortably, if I have an extension to hold up the long end. I cannot rip, rabbet or dado with a chop saw. Mitering a simple rafter tail with a table saw is difficult, and dangerous. My compromise is the table saw and a circular saw. With care and practice I can cut framing elements with the circular saw. Not as accurately or fast as a miter saw, but still OK. And I can, with a long straight-edge, rip plywood with a circular saw. But I still need the table saw for accuracy and fancy cuts.

Customer Reviews

15 Amp 12 in. Heavy-Duty Single-Bevel Compound Miter Saw is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 126.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome miter saw so far I bought this after doing a ton of research and decided against a ryobi 12" sliding miter saw that was on sale. I figured out for my use having the most accurate miter saw and one I could adjust if needed was more important than sheer cut capacity. I plan on getting a table saw which will fill in what I can't use this for and with the 12" blade you still have plenty of capacity. I really like how solid this one feels and is easy to adjust like most dewalt stuff it feels solid. The blad out of the box produces very nice cuts at least with pine. I'm just starting out my woodworking career so working with 2x4's and also doing a full house remodel so using it for some framing and probably some trim molding down the road. Overall very happy just wish I had a nice miter stand to go with it as I don't have time to build my own yet.

It's a replacement for a double-bevel Dewalt that we used for three years. Tuff saw. Light weight and easy to adjust. One problem, the louvers in the guard let debris fly through.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Happy Saw works great out of the box. I was able to get a good deal on a price match as the saw was on sale at a competitor. HD was great about matching price. Very happy with the saw. Wish it had a laser, but it's very easy to line up without it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Dewalt 15 amp 12in. Saw If I have a complaint, it would be that it doesn't hold a square as well as I'd hoped. Other than that, I'm happy with it.

The following are a few issues, very, very, poor dust collection system, I hooked up an old shop vac, still isnt great but better than Dewalt's little bag. Next the bolt kept loosening up on the blade, after about 6 cuts i had to retighten the bolt, twice, will watch. If you are not a pro, the lack of a laser, probably is not a big deal, but if you use on a regular basis, opt for a laser. Overall, after a few issues taken care of, I think its a great saw for the price, high quality, plenty of power, would definitely purchase again. I mounted the saw on an old table saw, works great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent saw I've always been one of those people that thought Dewalt is junk. Like many of you, I have used every chop saw and dual compound miter saw imaginable. Years later I became a wood shop and metal shop teacher and bought a Makita LS1216L and a Dewalt rolling saw stand. That saw worked great for everything we did, but we were tired of hauling that beast out for smaller tasks where we wouldn't cut big sheets of plywood, huge 6x10's, or other big material. So we went looking for a smaller saw that would handle most small/medium tasks. After many bad experiences with other brands of 12-inch compound miter saws, we decided to buy this one. I watched this saw get day-in and day-out abuse from students who cut too fast (forced the saw through the cut) and bogged out the motor to one-half speed, started the saw with the blade touching the work, let the saw run too long, let the saw slam back to its upright position, chopped wood not against the fence, never cleaned the cutting area, or used extremely dull blades all day. I had students using pine and the saw got covered in resin and sap that hardened to amber over the next day. (Hey, I can hear you judging me fellas, I had thirty-two inner city kids in these classes [no injuries-knock on wood]). One week I had students blazing away for hours chopping hickory and pecan, leaving the saw's motor (and gearbox) hot to the touch. Long story short: you couldn't find a better field testing environment than a high school shop class. Despite this merciless abuse, this saw cut perfectly accurate. It is loud (as expected), and the brake doesn't like the kind of resharpened heavy blades I use, but nonetheless, after school, I made fine furniture with this same saw. One time, a student tried to chop through hard rock maple with 7 nails and even two 3/4" lag bolts embedded in it and this saw still managed to make a nice clean cut (with a brand new sharp blade, of course). I used it to chop and cut shoulders on giant 5 in dovetails in 8/4 Bubinga. or trimming off a 64th of the same without it drifting away...always leaving my work dead on 90 degrees. We even cut aluminum, copper, cement/concrete encrusted 2x4's, weird laminates, acrylic, you name it, this saw performed almost flawlessly. This, along with a previous good experience with the DW716 and DW717, proves to me that these saws have earned their chops for the jobsite, and Dewalt still make many very good tools. Period. I wish I could say the same about the DWS780.
