Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 15 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Puts other drills to shame! I was hesitant to spend $400 on this drill when there are "comparable" drills for less, but after using it for several days, I am glad I did. This thing puts other drills I've used to shame. I've been using it around the house for a few days now and have not yet had to charge it where as my older drill would have required 2 or 3 charges already. It has tons of power and just feels good to use. My only complaints are that there is no way to turn off the light, which I found can be distracting in some cases. Also the case is mediocre but I'll get over it. July 7, 2010

Rated 5 out of 5 by Exceptionaly good power and durability. I have a no. of drills including Rigid which is very good but this 18volt is by far the best drill I have ever owned or used in many years of working with many different types of materials. Even the Consumers rating on this product is the best there is for the serious tradsman or home owner. November 26, 2009
Rated 1 out of 5 by Already obsolete Great $400 for a drill and DW has discod already - dropped the xrp style battery for a new max20 - really 18v slide pack. should have stuck with Milwaukee !!! September 19, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by most power of any 18v cordless I take the various manufacturers' drill power ratings with a large grain of salt. Actual performance drilling depends on how effective the gear box is in getting the power of the motor to the drill and getting as much power as possible out of the power pack. A lot of drills promise a great deal of power but in actual use I find that with lithium-ion drills the power is intermittent with the drill stalling as the battery pack overheats. With Hitachi the drill will shut down 4-5 times with a single hole. With the Makita the power is OK for light to medium drilling but there is not enough torque for large drill bits or hole saws. The DeWalt lithium-ion is in a class of its own thanks in large measure to its unique use of a 3-speed gearbox. In the middle range its performance is on par with the Milwaukee M18 and the Makita hammer drills but when the DeWalt is in the lowest range it will power through situations that stops these other 18v cordless drills in their tracks. I was on a job where we had to cut 6" holes in OSB and we were using the new Blue Boar TCT hole cutters on a 1/2" cord drill. I decided to try out the Milwaukee M18 and the Makita and a Hitachi on the project using drills from the crew that were newly charged. The M18 was successful, the Makita and Hitachi were not. But the DeWalt DCD970 powered through with zero hesitation and it felt like I was using a heavy duty cord drill. Recharge times is less than 15 minutes regardless of how long the drill has been used. The case is not a great design but good enough. The side handle mounts in any direction which is great. I don't like the design used by Makita, Milwaukee, and Ridgid, where the handle has to be mounted straight out from the handle. The chuck is a bit stiff and hard at times to loosen but I am hoping this will improve over time. This is the only negative and one I will gladly deal with in return for the smooth power and fast recharge time of this drill and its lithium-ion battery packs. If you want maximum power to the drill and a lithium-ion power pack that does not overheat and shut down, this is the drill to get. We have the latest and greatest 18v cordless drills from Hitachi, Milwaukee, Ridgid, Makita, and Hitachi being used by our crews and this new DeWalt tops them all and is now the favored drill.
