This fundamental characteristic greatly affects value and the absence leaves me guessing at what I would be getting with this package. I work on a rooftop and don't want to have to recharge too often.

18-Volt XRP Lithium-Ion 1/2 in. Cordless Hammer Drill/Drill/Driver Kit is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from most power of any 18v cordless I take the various manufacturers' drill power ratings with a large grain of salt. Actual performance drilling depends on how effective the gear box is in getting the power of the motor to the drill and getting as much power as possible out of the power pack. A lot of drills promise a great deal of power but in actual use I find that with lithium-ion drills the power is intermittent with the drill stalling as the battery pack overheats. With Hitachi the drill will shut down 4-5 times with a single hole. With the Makita the power is OK for light to medium drilling but there is not enough torque for large drill bits or hole saws. The DeWalt lithium-ion is in a class of its own thanks in large measure to its unique use of a 3-speed gearbox. In the middle range its performance is on par with the Milwaukee M18 and the Makita hammer drills but when the DeWalt is in the lowest range it will power through situations that stops these other 18v cordless drills in their tracks. I was on a job where we had to cut 6" holes in OSB and we were using the new Blue Boar TCT hole cutters on a 1/2" cord drill. I decided to try out the Milwaukee M18 and the Makita and a Hitachi on the project using drills from the crew that were newly charged. The M18 was successful, the Makita and Hitachi were not. But the DeWalt DCD970 powered through with zero hesitation and it felt like I was using a heavy duty cord drill. Recharge times is less than 15 minutes regardless of how long the drill has been used. The case is not a great design but good enough. The side handle mounts in any direction which is great. I don't like the design used by Makita, Milwaukee, and Ridgid, where the handle has to be mounted straight out from the handle. The chuck is a bit stiff and hard at times to loosen but I am hoping this will improve over time. This is the only negative and one I will gladly deal with in return for the smooth power and fast recharge time of this drill and its lithium-ion battery packs. If you want maximum power to the drill and a lithium-ion power pack that does not overheat and shut down, this is the drill to get. We have the latest and greatest 18v cordless drills from Hitachi, Milwaukee, Ridgid, Makita, and Hitachi being used by our crews and this new DeWalt tops them all and is now the favored drill.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Suprising I bought this drill to replace a Milwaukee 0822-24 v18 (if anyone knows this drill, then you know that it is a beast) drill that was stolen from me on a job site. I was saddened to see that Milwaukee no longer makes that drill line anymore, and their current line of tools, the M18s seems to be aimed at everyday diyers than contractors. From the minute that I took this DeWalt out the box it has surprised me on every level. It is very comfortable to hold and well balanced and it is way lighter than my old Milwaukee. I routinely use 3 - 31/2" deck screws and I have to say that this drill has all the power of my old Milwaukee and then some. 2nd gear on the DeWalt is much faster than low gear on the Milwaukee, but at the same power and if I need more power for a particularly tough screw I still have 1st gear (about the same speed as low gear on the Milwaukee). 3rd gear is blazing fast, and if I am not careful when drilling into wood I will be out the other side of a 2 x 4 and through whatever I have the 2 x 4 setting on in a blink of an eye. It also blows through metal just as fast whether you’re using self tappers or a drill bit.The battery life is also amazing, the drill really does seem to keep going and going. The chuck on the DeWalt gives me some problems every now and then by dropping bits but I think that every drill does that from time to time (my Milwaukee and Craftsman did to). I think that another important feature this drill has is that the gear box is all metal including the shift ring, something not found on the Milwaukee, Makita’s and Ridgid’s. This DeWalt is a great drill to own and a pleasure to use. The power is delivered fast and very smooth, battery life is excellent and the weight is low. I wood highly recommend this drill to anyone looking for power and performance along with durability. I loved my old drill but sorry Milwaukee, DeWalt has out done you with this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best drill Ever... period. Biggest kudo points for this drill was that it survived a trip to the bottom of a pool and back!!! I was building a covered patio right up next to a pool and accidently dropped this baby in!!! I freaked!! I quickly grabbed the net and fished it out, took the battery and bit out, and let it dry out in the sun for a few hours. I kid you not, 3 hours later it was back in perfect form. It didn't even slow down in speed!!! And it lived to finish the project and is still going! I use this drill everyday, and I wouldn't go anywhere else for a drill. This is the mack daddy of them all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Ever! I have used many different brands of cordless drills. This one is by far the best I have ever owned/used. The lithium ion battery lasts a long time! I purchased this drill and used it on a suspended ceiling job and this thing kept going and going and going! The drill is powerful and has adjustments to tailor it's use for any drilling/fastener job it is designed to do. The grip is very comfortable. I would highly recommend this to any pro or weekend do it yourself person.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product gets the job done! This item really works well. No problems switching from one mode to another. Battery life is exceptionally Good. Have used it on a few home jobs and have not recharged it since the first one. Runs as strong as when I first charged the battery. Used the Hammer drill on concrete putting lights in the stone fence~no problem! Used the drill drive to drill thru a door frame and used the screw drive to put a door on my shed out back. Wish I bought this item a long time ago!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptionaly good power and durability. I have a no. of drills including Rigid which is very good but this 18volt is by far the best drill I have ever owned or used in many years of working with many different types of materials. Even the Consumers rating on this product is the best there is for the serious tradsman or home owner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Puts other drills to shame! I was hesitant to spend $400 on this drill when there are "comparable" drills for less, but after using it for several days, I am glad I did. This thing puts other drills I've used to shame. I've been using it around the house for a few days now and have not yet had to charge it where as my older drill would have required 2 or 3 charges already. It has tons of power and just feels good to use. My only complaints are that there is no way to turn off the light, which I found can be distracting in some cases. Also the case is mediocre but I'll get over it.
