I was looking at this: DeWalt 20-Volt Li-Ion Cordless Brushless Compact Drill. Is this a hammer drill? The term "Drill/Driver" is used to describe many of these drills, is that what this means. I have a DeWalt 18 volt 1/2 inch chuck hammer drill 15 years old and needs to be replaced. I was looking at this one or would you recommend another?

Not a hammer drill, it is a brushless model. It has much more power and run time as a standard brush type. Does have 1/2" chuck. I have drilled six concrete anchor holes (1/2") and never lost power.

Braking Sound

This question is from 20-Volt Lithium-Ion 1/2 in. Cordless Brushless Compact Drill
Asked by

September 7, 2015
I returned this drill to Home Depot because of a loud (retching) sound the drill made when stopping, which I think is related to the drill's breaking system. Has anyone else experienced this sound? Looking at some reviews of this drill/model on YouTube, it seems this might be a normal characteristic of this drill and they also felt it did not sound right as other similar (20V brushless) drills did not make this loud and annoying mechanical sound. I wanted to find out what others experienced and their thoughts before considering this drill again. Thanks

Yes, this is normal. In fact, if you have the drill set on speed setting 2, the sudden braking affect can actually loosen the chuck. Can be a bit annoying.

Lol... yea thats normal. It's just trying to spit the bit out.
Having mine since they came out, they're still working fine.
I thought the same thing when I first got it but got use to it.
Currently have 5 drills & 3 impacts and they get the job done.
I wouldnt worry about it. They're light, powerful & a pleasure to use.

It should. I have used one of these all day on one battery, one charge. Li+ batteries have the highest charge density (coulombs/lb) than any other battery type, primary or secondary.

Yes it would, maybe too much. Try low speed first.
The 4-1/2" hole saw is almost bigger than the drill.
I recently blasted a batch of 4" holes through 3/4" MDO ply.
A few times the holesaw came out of the chuck. Thats one
beef with this drill. Otherwise it's a charm to use and carry.
Nothing like holding 3 guns in one hand :D
Be careful drilling thin acrylics unclamped. Sharp bits will
grab and ruin it.

The manual states the max size hole saw should be 2" in wood. However, I have used it with a 4" hole saw in wood 1/2" thick with no problems. Having said that, you'll need to decide if HDPE plastic has a similar density as wood. If the plastic is more dense then the answer is no.

20-Volt Lithium-Ion 1/2 in. Cordless Brushless Compact Drill is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 54.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dewalt is the drill to reach for. Jumped on the 20 volt max product line with this new XR brushless drill when my old 18 volt Dewalt drill & XRP batteries finally died. Lighter in weight compared to my old Dewalt & battery combo, but plenty of power for my needs. Pleased with the new 2.0 XR batteries with fuel gauges. More than enough "juice" for my uses so far, without adding too much weight to tool. Wish I could have waited for the kit with the new single speed impact driver, but want to get the bare tool 3 speed impact that has been out a while anyway. I plan on adding more 20 volt max (& XR) tools over time. Overall, very pleased with this purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful, powerful tool. Drill has all the power I will ever need. It feels good in your hand. Very light weight. Battery power lasts an incredibly long time. The LED light is well directed and a welcome feature for old eyes. I replaced the belt clip with an additional bit holder I bought online. The ideal cordless drill/driver for the seasoned handyman or professional.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor customer service I really enjoyed this drill when it worked, plenty of power. However, I had only used the drill maybe 10 times, when I was working on a small project and the drill began to smoke. called customer service and sent it in (still under warranty). It has been 2 months, I still dont have my drill back, and after calling them I dont even have an answer as to when I may get it back. Very disappointed in customer service.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad Chuck I got this awesome, or so I thought, drill at Home Depot with a price matched price of $185. What a deal I thought. The drill is awesome, feels great in your hands and you can feel the power of the brushless motor pushing 2000 rpms... then the drill bit falls off. This drill has a mechanical brake and when it stops, the defective cheap chuck just spits out whatever bit you put in. This drill has 2 speeds and it is fine on slower but higher torque #1 setting but on the #2, you can pretty much bet that the chuck will come loose and out comes the bit. I thought it was just this one drill so I got it exchanged. The replacement did the same exact thing. YouTube has a guy actually showing what happens. Now, I am a happy owner of a Milwaukee brushless Fuel drill!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Choice Great weight to power ratio, Grip / Handle gives more support and less fatigue. Ratcheting chuck has positive grip on any drill bit. Easy shift between speeds for varying conditions. Great Tool plain and Simple !!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dewalt Sets the Standard As a woman in a man's industry, I find the edge where I can get it! I started out with the 18V & have graduated to these newer brushless compact drills. For my small size, the power, weight, & balance of Dewalt compliments my speed perfectly. Doesn't matter if I am doing rack, display, steel, or wood. Rest assured, it holds up, & gets the right job done the first time! Best money I have ever spent, & best drill I have ever owned! Well worth it's weight in gold!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best cordless drill I've ever owned This is by far the best cordless drill I've ever owned and I've owned quite a few over many years. The power is excellent and the battery lasts it seems forever. I use it for almost everything including on the job work and at home. I wish I had purchased the combo kit with the drill and the hammer driver. Now I'm going to buy the hammer driver. Totally satisfied with this drill and highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dewalt does it again! the new XR 20 volt, is the drill of all drills!! I have the 18v, the compact 20v Max, and now the XR. I am truly impressed! The XR goes above and beyond all the drills of the past. The power is unbelievable, along with torque to match. Its compact and well balanced. I definitely recommend the new XR to everyone in search of a drill. no need for the rest, reach for the best!!
