Customer Questions & Answers

Play in the impact driver bit?

When I insert a bit into the Impact Driver, it locks in, but there's almost 1/8" of play. As in: I place the bit against a screw to drive it, and the bit moves in about an 1/8th. Take the driver off the screw and the bit springs back 1/8". Is this normal? It kind of bothers me. I'd rather a positive lock on the bit with no play at all.

Mine had a little wobble to it but my main problem is it seriously lacks sufficient torque to drive #8 four inch stainless deck screws into cedar 2x4's. It's basically a useless tool in my opinion and if I had known its limited capabilities I'd opted for the single drill motor with an extra battery instead. I've used DeWalt 18volt drill motors on the job daily for years and they are the gold standard...these Lithium battery units are super lightweight with long battery life, but lack serious driving torque to drill holes in wood and metal on a consistent basis. They're really no better than a soured up powered screwdriver more so than a true drill motor as advertised. A drill motor to me means you should be able to mix a bucket of tile grout or thin set way these "drill motors" or "rattle guns" can spin a paddle mixer. Good thing I have my half inch Milwaukee Hole Hogs for serious work.

Does the impact driver have enough torque to handle car lug nuts? What is the chuck size of the impact driver also?

Asked by: kkm1031
No. If you want a cordless impact for that job, the best I've found on the market is the Milwaukee M18 Fuel 1/2" impact.

Is this a brushless set?

I have looked at ad on line and don't see any information on this set for brushless versus brushed.
Asked by: rneilson
Sure seems like it is to me. This kit comes with the DCF886 impact, which is brushless, and the DCD790 drill, which is also brushless.

Lowes has this for $259. Will you honor your 10% guarantee on it if I buy online? (259 less 10%)? Thanks

Asked by: Wozzie
I prefer Home Depot to Lowe's for personal preference, but if you have a Lowe's credit card, Home Depot will give you a 5% off if you show them the card at time of purchase. I do not know if it will work with purchasing it online.

Customer Reviews

20-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Combo Kit (2-Tool) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 65.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compact, Ergonomic, Powerful. Mechanical and aesthetic greatness. The Drill: Now, I have always worked on a budget and went for what I thought were "most bang for buck" deals. For example, I bought a 12v Black and Decker drill NiCad battery that served it's purpose for about a year. However, after buying a house and embarking on major improvements it was time to invest in something better. I used a friend's DeWalt and it blew my mind on how much of an improvement it was. I did some research, headed to home depot and picked up this set. I've used this drill with speed bore attachments, hole saw attachments, drill bits, screwdriver bits, torx, you name it. It delivers excellent trigger and feathering control. Speeds are true to settings. The belt attachment and bit attachment are easy to remove, add, or switch sides. In my opinion, this is the best non-industrial cordless drill on the market hands down. It is comfortable and balanced in your hand, attachments are ambidextrous. Impact Driver: I haven't used this too much but from what I have used it delivers the same consistency of satisfaction and performance as the above. Charger/Batteries: This comes with 2 batteries and a charger. They work as you'd expect. Fast charging and good use per charge. I do think I'm going to invest in some 4 Ah instead of the 2 Ah though as I plan to get the whole line of DeWalt 20v tools. 2 Ah gets the job done on a full charge. To elaborate on the "Con": The nylon bag is nice for the drill, driver, a few bitsets and that's about it. I'm kind of an OCD organizational freak so I would have preferred getting the hardcase with designated spots. But, the nylon is durable, compact, holds what it needs to loosely and gets the job done.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Researched this drill for a month I have been a loyal Milwaukee user for some time but wanted to switch things up. I read tons of reviews and watched many, many reviews on YouTube about this set but once I got it I was immediately disappointed. The drill had TERRIBLE chuck wobble straight out of the bad in fact that it caused the entire drill to vibrate and grind. I packaged it back up and exchanged it to a different Home Depot for an identical set, hoping to get one from a different batch. Before I left the parking lot I broke it open and it had the EXACT same wobble. I gave it 2 stars because the impact is extremely well built and very powerful. Make certain you test this one out before you leave. I'll probably try again in a few months once some of this stock has been sold off.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Out Lasts and Out Performs! A decade ago i took a chance and bought a Dewalt cordless drill. It has functioned far beyond its capabilities, EVERYtime I picked it up. It has outperformed, out lived, and stood up to the abuse that comes with construction. After it finally gave out I was eager to get another, and so to the research blog I went. The brush-less motors were new to me but after asking for personal reviews and reading online I grabbed the drill/driver set. They are EVERYthing and more than my last one. Lighter, more power, work light on each, and battery life is three times the 18-volt from the last one. I highly recommend these tools for anyone that is in heavy day-to-day construction, or the honey-do-lister, these are the tools every man needs in his arsenal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from eggbrook's review is flawed, the charger does work i had the same problem as eggbrook, the charger would stay solid red when i put a dead battery in for charging. i even called dewalt customer service and they didn't know the reason. here's the deal: you need to push the batteries down onto the charger till you hear it click in, then the charge light will start to blink and it'll start to charge. if you just rest the battery on the charger till it makes initial contact the charge light will stay solid red and the batteries will not charge. other than that, i think it's a great set of tools.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product!! Ever since I purchased this kit I have been hammering on it. Drilling concrete, 1/4 inch steel, blowing holes through studs with a 1 1/2" paddle bit and its going strong... Impact driver is a beast as well. Very impressed with this kit and am not surprised by the quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from loving it love my new drills. i have used them every single day since i recieved them, approx month and a half or so ago. battery life last forever. impact driver is a beast. drilver works well. wish it was a little bit lighter but its all good. ive dropped the driver twice from 5-6 feet high and watched as drill bounced across floor. no damage thank god. i removed the belt hooks since i dont wear a belt or jeans for that matter. bit holder is just okay. a little bit too tight of a fit but its all good. i also used the driver with a small paddle to mix up some drywall mud. worked no problem. drilled out some 1.5" holes with no problem aswelll. today i drilled through many 2x4's with 5/8 spade bit with no issues either. also the batteries charge super quick.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Happy Wow, what a difference from the other brand Ive been using. The quality and effectiveness of these XR's is unreal and theyre very powerful. You've got to use one for yourself to believe it. Im so glad I spent the extra money for the brushless. The engineering of these babies is well thought out. I also really like the belt hangers. Drilling and fastening take very little effort with this combo. Its a pleasure using these tools and I highly recommend them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lots of power and lightweight I have dreamed of owning a Dewalt Driver forever. I couldn't afford one though. Now in addition to prices I can afford it has improved with features like 20 VDC brushless motors. Wow! There is one drawback. The drill bit keeps loosening in the chuck when I start and stop the motor due to the high on and off torque. I kicked the speed range down and that helped, Maybe there is no coasting on a brushless motor.
