No, it does not. Personally, if I were getting this as a gift I'd prefer to buy the bits myself so I could choose the level of quality I wanted. But you know him better than I do, so HD will have some nice sets to go along with this. Also, a driver bit set will be needed if he doesn't already have some.

I've already drilled holes in wood and masonry using this drill with great success. It's variable speed based on how hard you pull the trigger. I put 5/8" holes in wooden roof beams like a knife through butter and put 1/4" holes into masonry with no issues. Haven't tried any type of metals/ steels just yet, but I imagine with a sharp drill bit, it'll do the trick too.

December 8, 2013
Answer:
Can easily drill holes, fits any bit up to 1/2 diameter. Excellent power to drill through any wood, most thin metals. Use high speed setting. Thicker metals would need to use increasing larger holes to get to the size desired. Not a hammer drill, so drilling in concrete not recommended, but one smaller diameter hole for a concrete screws is possible - just takes time.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great buy I bought one of these about a year ago and used it pretty much every day until some idiot stole it. I replaced it with a Milwaukee 18v red lithium. This drill will work circles around the Milwaukee. Hands down, the best cordless for the money and better than most of the high cost drills. May 6, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by 20-Volt Max Lithium-Ion 1/2 in. Cordless Drill/Driver Kit I've owned 2 Dewalt Drill/Drivers 18v in the last 4-5 years and considered the best on the market. This purchase has come with 2 batteries that will hold a charge for maybe 15 minutes. Both are well below the length as compared to the Lithium-Ions from past batteries including my 2 year old batteries from my Ryobi Drill that is 5 years old. Don't know what is different about these new ones, but they have maybe half the power to turn the drill as they should. They charge full according to charger, but not sure if it is drill or batteries .Not sure if I recommended these yes correctly, but Dewalt purchases in past have been excellent. July 12, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Descent for the price The drill works ok. I thought it would have had more torque like my last DeWalt. August 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Exactly what I was looking for! This cordless drill meets all my needs. It's the perfect size with lots of power - much easier to handle than my old cordless Craftsman, and I did like that a lot. Batteries are expensive these days and the fact it came with two of them was a bonus. I can always have one charging while using the drill. Like most drills today, the torque and speed settings work great. Back to the size - my wife does a lot of wood working as well and this drill is really easy for her to handle too. Wish I would have bought one of these a long time ago. February 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by heack of deal I'm a poor guy and doping $100 on a drill is a big deal to me. I've always had good experience DeWalt tools except for the price. I was concerned that this drill with two batteries for $99 for was the beginning of the end of the DeWalt name as they slide into discount tools territory. Turns out not to be the case, this drill is awesome. One can get just a drill used for pretty cheap what makes this package such a good deal is the TWO batteries included. After putting the drill to task I can say this drill is a mad man. See project photos here... http://mythis.com/acwolf/photo/501 January 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very Good Drill Love this Drill. It's battery seems to last longer than my previous Drills. August 16, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Does the job Plenty of torque and RPM. The chuck is good, but it takes so many turns to adjust it that using power to spin it is the only way. August 9, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Wow - what a great drill! Fantastic! I can't believe how light it is and how long the battery lasts compared to my old NiCad drill. The torque is so strong it almost hurts my wrist. This is an excellent example of DeWalt quality and value. I should have replaced my old drill a lot sooner. August 2, 2016
