The one nail button means you can only fire once ever trigger. The three nail button allows you to do multiple firings while hold on to the trigger for every press down of the gun.

Answer:
One nail requires you to squeeze the trigger for every nail shot. 3 nails is the rapid setting. You squeeze and hold the trigger and it fires every time you press it against a board.

I wouldn't recommend using anything longer than 3" nails. Longer nails wont drive home completely in some applications, but you can use up to 3-1/2" nails.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Nails bend in OSB I have the DeWalt 20v drill kit and love it so i wanted to add this to my arsenal and lose the air hose. Im in the middle of building a house and this nailer drove 12d nails into studs great while framing but jammed constantly when it met OSB on either the subfloor or wall sheathing with 8d nails. I was forced to return the gun and get out the conpressor. September 5, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Great look and rigid power tool but jam all the time Most of my power tools are made by Dewalt and they seem to last pretty long and reliable accept this power tool which I had to returned after 2 weeks of usage. It ran into the nail constantly being jammed after fire. The jam release trigger couldn't help it and it wouldn't let me fire the gun again after 5-10 minutes later. I retried and the same thing happen. I saw other people put same reviews on the jamming issue before buying but I took a chance. So, I'd recommend to stay away. August 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best tool I've pruchased in a long time I am not a pro, but I bought this because I had some roof damage and didn't want to drive a bunch of nails with a hammer. It worked great. I used it for a roof framing job because of storm damage and had zero problems with it. Hugh time saver, easy to use, no gas or hose. Put a battery and nails in and go. July 20, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Must buy! !!! Great framing nailer, would get 5 stars if it used all nails in cartridge August 2, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Amazing I love this product super great my husband loves it at work !! July 12, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Annoying features The slide release is really annoying. If you set the gun down on the left side you can release the pressure holding the nail strip. Next shot usually ends up in a jam. The trigger lock is annoying as well. Too easy to bump and it always seems to lock at the worst time. I would not buy again. June 11, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Junk Broke on 2nd day of use. Called Dewalt since I was on a jobsite hoping they had a fix for me to do onsite. No luck. Waited on hold for almost an hour. Rep asked if I had receipt and told me to return item. They have no troubleshooting available. This is a heavy, overpriced piece of junk. June 9, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Wouldn't buy again! :-( No issue nailing 3 + in nails flush, however, this gun stops for no reason, often. It also "jammed" with less than 10 hours .. less than a 1/3 of a box of nails. Had to be returned to Dewalt for repair. Sat in living room for 6 months prior to using. too late to return it now. Will buy pneumatic to replace! May 8, 2016
