Rated 5 out of 5Â by Motorhead Best Drill on the market!!
This drill is compact, lightweight, and really packes a punch! The clutch is an electronic, which just stops instead of slipping and making noise. That will help prolong battery life. It has a 3 speed metal transmission, carbide bit holder, and nice adjustable side handle. Torque output is 708 in/lbs, sure only 17 less than the red brand but the other features makes up for that. Check the web for test, this one came out on top!! This is Dewalts flagship drill. There is NO Way the neg review is valid.

This tool is top-notch. Starting with the motor. The diameter is about 20% larger than its next smaller brother, the DWD790. The motor on the 790 is basically the same is DeWalt's impact drivers. A great motor. But the DWD995 motor is an entirely new brushless design. Way bigger. Way more powerful. The 995 motor matches my older 28v HD that was part of DeWalt's 'Weapons of Mass Destruction' 28v/36v line-up and marketing campaign sometime around 2008. DeWalt dropped the 28v but still offers the 36v. I picked up a 4 piece 28v set right when DeWalt discontinued and Home Depot was clearing them out. I got the last one. It was a great deal. I have totally abused those 28v tools. The reason I mention this is that the 28v drill is rated at 650 watts output. That's exactly what the 995 is rated - but in a smaller more compact and more efficient 20v brushless package that runs significantly cooler. I used to have to wait 15 minutes or even a half hour for the 28v brute to cool after heavy use. No more.
Motor control is much improved too. Two things. First is the electronic clutch. Some like it, some don't. I don't use the clutch that often. When I do it seems alright. The second improvement is that the drill modifies the motor output to match a varying load. It does that to try and keep the tool RPM constant because that helps keep the tool running steady and that means it's easier to control. If you like the way this tool feels when you use it, it's not your imagination. This tool feels great in your hands. Much better than any other drill I've ever used - including any other DeWalt.
My next comment has to do with the power this tool cranks out. DeWalt ( to my knowledge) is the only manufacturer that specs their tool using power output. That makes the real sense. Power is easily used to calculate just about any other metric. Torque is trickier. Incredibly, some manufacturers spec their drills using torque measurements which are not so easily used to calculate power output. Also, for electric drills, torque is maximum at full power but at zero RPM. The measurement is accomplished by placing a torsion gauge in a vice and connecting the drill to it. That way the drill stays at zero RPM while full battery voltage is applied. If you can manage to arrive at the common sense conclusion that this test doesn't measure actual work (of the kind a drill is normally employed to do) you would be correct. Power output is not what these manufacturers optimize for. The DWD995 blows away the competition in its ability to do actual work because DeWalt has optimized torque output to the working speeds the tool is most likely to be running at under heavy loads. The 3 speed transmission gives the tool an even wider range of tasks that can fall into this optimized power output curve. Most other drills use a 2 speed transmission. I almost never use the middle speed because the tool has so much power and torque even in high gear, but when you do find yourself needing it you will be glad it's there.
The one other thing I need to mention is the quality of the chuck DeWalt is using in this drill. It is entirely about top quality. It has absolutely the best grip and action of any chuck I've ever come across.
Sorry, I've gone on longer than I probably should have. Except to say I sure hope DeWalt finds a way to put this motor and the premium concept into more of its cordless tools.

Rated 5 out of 5Â by Alex Best Dewalt Product Yet
I own plenty of dewalt tools, and use them on a daily basis, but this is my favorite one by far.
This kit comes with two 4 amp batteries, which last a whole days worth of abuse. It feels like you can go forever between charges. That was never the case with my 18v dewalt tools, a good hour of work and they were spent, requiring to pause and do something else while the batteries charged.
This drill is sturdy and reliable, and well balanced. The 'fuel gauge' on the batteries are a great feature so you know at a glance roughly how much output time you have left. The led light is great when your working in small unlit spaces, and the fact that it stays on for an extra 20 seconds afterward is very handy.
The brushless motor is more consistent, higher output, and more durable than its brushed counterpart. My only complaint with the XR/brushless model is that the resistance is not accomplished by mechanical clutch, but rather by load sensing. Where the clutched model might wear down over time, at least it was very consistent and repeatable. With this semi intelligent design, based on your variable drill speed, it may overshoot or undershoot the intended clutch setting. You will find this to be a very annoying problem when drilling a lot of common holes, or repetitive fastening.
Otherwise, a rock solid drill that has become my new go to tool for any job.

I've been investing in Dewalts brushless 20v line, and each tool I pick up to replace my 18v NiCd's is better than the last. I bought the 3 speed impact which is hands down the best impact ever, and the compact hd for underground mining (lots of steel, and shot-crete). This premium hd was actually a Christmas gift, and holy cow the difference between it, and the compact is night and day. Torque for miles, flawless chuck, and just an overall overwhelming display of quality in build. Everything is crisp, and solid, and it's balanced perfectly with the 4Ah battery. You looking to switch battery platforms, upgrade drills, or already have some lithium ion 20v stuff? Buy this. You won't regret it.

Rated 5 out of 5Â by BrianN Great power combined with excellent run time
Replaced my old 18v tools with these 20v gems from DeWalt. Performance compared to the old tools is excellent, and they were pretty good to begin with. I'm not a contractor so I can't tell you how these will fare in the working world but for me they will fill the bill for many years to come.
