Product Overview

The DEWALT 20 in. Variable-Speed Scroll Saw helps you create accurate, detailed workpieces and has a user-friendly configuration with easily accessible controls, reduced vibration design and variable-speed performance. Featuring a double parallel-link arm design for accurate cuts, the arm pivots from the back to the front, shortening the distance the arm moves for smoother, quieter operation. Easy to handle with variable-speed control for application-specific performance, the on/off switch, speed control, blade-tensioning lever and flexible dust blower are all located within easy reach of the front upper arm. The dependable 1.3 Amp motor delivers 400 to 1750 SPM for plenty of power, while the compact design makes portability around your jobsite or workshop a breeze. Durable for years of reliable use, this saw has a cast iron table that bevels 45 Degree to the left and 45 Degree to the right for versatility and also provides excellent support.

  • Double parallel-link arm design dramatically reduces vibration and noise for accurate cuts
  • Exclusive tool-free blade clamps allow blade changes in seconds for less downtime
  • On/off switch, electronic variable speed, flexible dust blower and blade-tensioning lever are all located on the front upper arm for easy accessibility
  • Arm design pivots from the back of the saw to the front, shortening the arm movement for smoother, quieter operation
  • Arm lifts so blade can be easily threaded through the material for inside cuts
  • Unique arm design keeps the blade perpendicular to the work, reducing over or under cutting
  • Oversized, cast-iron table provides excellent material support and bevels 45 Degree left and right

Customer Questions & Answers

What is the thickest piece of wood that this saw can accommodate?

Asked by: Wyman
I havet cut a 2x4 but it is slow. 1x4 and any other like plywood is a breeze.

Does this saw require a stand or can it be used on a bench top?

Asked by: leapold
I am sure that it could be used on a bench top if it was fastened securely, but the leg set that is made for this saw is excellent and gives you more versatility of the tool. Since I cut pieces that are as large as 15 X 36 inches, bench top would not work for me, but even if I were only cutting small pieces, I would still prefer the leg set that is made specifically for this saw. If I were doing smaller items, as I have done in the past, I could comfortably sit on a stool and cut with this setup.

What type of blades does it except.

pin blades or painless. ?
Asked by: Karlos
The 788 takes a 5 inch plain end scroll saw blade. One CANNOT use a "pin end" scroll saw blade. There are many types of scroll saw manufacturers as well as configuration types. One needs to determine the product he/she is using and which blade will perform best. Two of the best blades out there are the Olson and the Flying Dutchman blades. Since I cut 16 puzzle pieces from a 12.7/8 X 10 inch piece of 1/2 inch birch plywood, I use an Olson Mach Speed 3.

I also got the stand and the light. There are a couple of reasons for taking one star off the review. It arrived without the upper and lower blade knobs. So I was not able to attach a blade and use the saw. I called Home Depot and ordered them but it took two and a half weeks for me to get them. I was not convinced that the representative understood what I needed so I called DeWalt also. They told me to return the saw and order a new one. I told them that was a great deal of effort and why could they not just mail them out to me. Finally they agreed. Two weeks later three large bolts arrived in the mail that had nothing to do with the saw at all. The other manufacturing issue I see is that the hole in the table for the saw blade is crooked. It is not a performance problem but it cause me to misjudge the center and direction of the blade. This is not major, it just requires me to mentally adjust. I could order a new table I suppose but I am not sure yet if I will. I have never owned a scroll saw so I cannot compare it to others. I did watch lots and lots of YouTube videos and I finally decided that those who were reviewing the cheaper scroll saws always said something like "It is OK but" or "Nice starter saw." It appeared that many of the cheaper ones had lots of frustrations associated with them when changing blades. So I decided to go with the DeWalt. The operation of the saw is great. It is very easy to use. I have one constant frustration and that is cutting in a straight line. I just cannot do it. The blades are made in such a way that the cut has a natural drift which causes the cut to go to your right. The crooked hole in the table causes me to misjudge the angle of push. Or maybe it is just me. As a result I get a very wobbly line whereby I continually try to find the correct angle of push and stay on it for a straight line. At this point I am really baffled as to how people do the amazing intricate work that can be viewed on YouTube. My work looks like I took a hack saw to it. I also ordered the stand and the light. I am glad I did. I put wheels on the stand that lock and so can easily roll the saw around. I work in my back yard and roll the saw under cover when not using it. The light is really important. My eyes are not as young as they once were and the very thin blades can be hard to see. There is a three month return warranty on the saw so I intend to give it my all during that time and find out if there are any other issues. I did call DeWalt to inform them that they sent me bolts instead of the blade screws. They put me on hold for ever. Then a recording came on telling me they would call me back and I would not lose my place in line. I never heard from them again. So, the customer service is pretty bad. Home Depot is a better way to go, at least during the three month warranty period.

My only negative was that the instruction book mentioned nothing about how to true up the blade before use. You simply can't rely on the base angle adjustment being 100% accurate. It would also be nice to include blade tightening as a part of the instructions.

I find it somewhat difficult to use the hold down..

Though somewhat pricey, it is everything as advertised and more. I have lost my fine motor (fingers) skills to a progressive muscle disorder. Changing blades in on my old Craftsman was a 20 minute affair. Now with the help of a "blade removal tool" which I've modified for my dexterity problems, tightening the pressure on both the top and lower blade thumb screws is a snap. For someone who wants to see what this "blade removal tool" is like, go to You Tube and enter Scroll saw blade removal tool for DeWalt and Excalibur machines.

That's basically what I wanted. It's heavy enough that not being able to lift it by the upper arm (only if used as a portable) is a bit of a negative, but maybe that's common to most scroll saws. I don't know. The flexible dust blower has enough links to it to actually do it's job without getting in the way. Couldn't say that for the Porter Cable version. Lacking is a work light, but I found exactly what I wanted for that elsewhere. (FAJ 30 LED 12-inches flexible gooseneck). Perhaps best of all, Home Depot had it at a price that beat anything I could find on the internet! Hopefully, I'll be able to upgrade my 4 star rating after I've had time to really put it to use.
