I am sure that it could be used on a bench top if it was fastened securely, but the leg set that is made for this saw is excellent and gives you more versatility of the tool. Since I cut pieces that are as large as 15 X 36 inches, bench top would not work for me, but even if I were only cutting small pieces, I would still prefer the leg set that is made specifically for this saw. I have mine mounted on a bench top. It requires 30 inches depth so I made an extension to mount it on my 24-inch work bench. This also permits me to move around the front of the table.

You do not have to have a stand. We have ours set up on the workbench. It's heavy enough that we don't even have it bolted down.

I could be used on a "sturdy" bench top. BUT YOU can't move around a bench top, so I would say get the stand that goes with the saw. Easy to put together, sturdy.

I bought a stand because of space reason. I'm sure you could mount it on a workbench but think about where to sit, put your feet, etc. I spend at least a couple of hours at a time so must be comfortable. Also I Hooke my shop dust collector hose to the stand to reduce the dust. There was no dust collection system with the one I bought

I have so far used my saw expressly with 1/2 inch cabinet grade birch. It cuts through it almost like butter, so I am sure that one could easily cut at least 1 inch pine lumber, and I believe it would, with the appropriate blade, cut hardwood up to an inch.

It's a scroll saw, so has a thin blade. It could accommodate a 2 inch piece of wood easily, but you'd probably not be cutting a 2" piece of wood on a scroll saw, I cut inch, and 3/4 inch all the time.

Let the saw do the work. Also, like someone else said, put your copper in between two pieces of thin (1/8 inch) plywood. Draw your design on the plywood and then tape the whole thing up really well so the metal cannot move inside the wood sandwich. This will give you clean cuts on the metal and keep copper dust from flying everywhere. You definitely still need to wear a mask while cutting metal with this though. Hope this helps! I bought this saw exclusively to cut metal ornaments (copper and brass). Read Less

I'm not sure why HD tech support answered like that. The saw does not come with metal cutting blade but they are certainly available. I have cut brass and aluminum on my saw. Don't know the gauges but thin. The blades will be called metal cutting or more commonly jewelry blades. Sandwich the metal between two pieces of thin ply and you should be just fine .

Thank you for your recent inquiry with The Home Depot. The 20 in Variable-Speed Scroll Saw may be good for cutting designs. Unfortunately, there is no metal cutting blade for this scroll saw. We appreciate your business and look forward to serving you in the future. Thank you for shopping Home Depot.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A Super Saw This is the best of several scroll saws I have owned. Rugged construction, but runs quietly with very little vibration. Easy blade changing and simple speed control. The quality in this saw speaks for itself. May 31, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love the DeWalt Scroll Saw After having waited for months to get the saw of my scrolling dreams, Home Depot ran a special that put it within the price range. I love the new saw. June 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Incredible scroll saw! Though made in Taiwan for DeWalt, this saw is a remarkably well built machine, easy to assemble, easy to adjust blade tension, and blade changing is also very simple. It has a built-in adjustable dust blower that improves your ability to follow the cut line. I especially like the ability to loosen the top blade grip and raise the upper arm to feed the blade through a hole in your workpiece for blind cuts. I was also surprised and very pleased with how quiet the machine is, you can barely hear it running. Love it! May 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best scroll saw Did a lot of research for scroll saws before settling for the DeWalt model. This is my first scroll saw so I was a little nervous spending this kind of money. Installing the blade was easy as well as tensioning the blade. Came with 2 blades and used them on various pieces of wood ( oak, maple and pine. ) from 1/4" thick to 3/4". Cut through all of them with no problem. Never even broke a blade. Also no vibration problems at all. Bought a foot peddle like several people had advised and it really helps. The table is nice and large and tilts easily . a dust port would have bee nice but I think I can rig something up to take care of that. Over all another great product from DeWalt. May 13, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Saw Highly recommend this scroll saw. I have used it on a few projects so far and it works great! May 31, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by DEWALT SCROLLSAW 788 THIS SCROLL SAW THE DEWALT 20 INCH 788 IS THE BEST SCROLL SAW ON THE MARKET.FOR THE MONEY,YOU CANT BEAT IT.THIS IS THE SECOND ONE I BUY.My first one lasted me about 6 years. It finely gave out.I used it just about 4-5 times a week.I'm retired and this is my enjoyment. It keeps me out of trouble! When my first one gave out, without a second though,I went to home depot and bought another one just like my old one.FOR THE PRICE, THEIR ARE THE BEST ON THE MARKET!!!!! May 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great saw Easy to assemble. Very solid and well built. Very quick as far as set up. Installing the blade is a breeze as well as tensioning the blade. I have mine just sitting on my work bench and had no problem with any vibrations. Couldn't wait to try it and I was very happy with it. Came with 2 blades and I used them to try it out seeing I have never had a scroll saw before. Cut through 3/4" oak and maple with no problems. Bought some better blades from woodcraft and can't wait to try them . Also cut 1/4" plexiglass and was impressed how smooth the cut was. Picked up a foot peddle to use with it and had no problems with that either. A very nice saw. Little pricey but worth it. April 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very good saw This saw is very easy to use and very quiet. I was very surprised when I turned it on and used it. I would very much recommend getting the stand that goes with it so that you have the manuverability to use the saw more effectively. I can't say enough good things about this saw. The ease of putting the blade on and off is so easy. I was going to get a cheaper saw just to get by, but I'm so glad I didn't. Well worth the money if you are going to be using it more than just a few times. April 12, 2016
