Customer Questions & Answers

Corded or Cordless?

The description says cordless, but the picture shows corded. The specs say corded in one place and cordless in another. Who ever did this should be reprimanded and possibly demoted, if there's anything lower, which there's probably not because you had an unpaid intern do it.
Asked by: SandyCofax
This model is 3 amp corded.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from YOU CAN GET THE VAC ATTACHMENT!!! To all of you 'pros" that are whining that DeWalt doesn't have a vac attachment for this tool, stop claiming to be a professional. If you can't look past your local big box store, you are not fit to be reviewing the tool. DeWalt now uses what it calls the "Air Lock" attachment system. The part number you need for this sander is DWV9000. I find it's available all over the place local + the internet. I just ordered mine, excited to get it and get some cleaner air. Now back to sanding my nursery furniture, she will be here in less than a month!!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Use to be 5 Star. Vacuum Adapter!! The design has a lot to desired. I only used Dewalt Sanders and I truely enjoy them, for me they are the best. This new collection/exhaust design has a MAJOR FLAW. You CANNOT connect to a vacuum. The old design you could with the proper attachment. I cannot find, anywhere, the attachment for the new design. So what are we to do Dewalt? Your engineer's didn't think that maybe a product that creates a lot of dust might want to be able to connect to a vacuum? Your old design had that in mind and it preformed perfectly. Come on Dewalt!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not a long lasting tool This is a 4-6 month sander at best. The problem lies with the hook and loop design. As mentioned by others, the heat, stress and fatigue will wear out the hooks on the sander. When it's new it's awesome but use it everyday and you won't hit 6 months without that part failing. I ended up buying a second one to find out-they're all the same!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sanding the day away! I picked up this random orbit sander to sand our new hardwood porch. DeWalt tools are definitely more expensive, but I'm a believer in "you get what you pay for"... (works out most of the time). I also like that DeWalt has a 90 day guarantee and standard 3 year warranty on their products. Anyway, to prep the porch for staining, I used this sander to remove the glaze of the new red meranti boards (purchased at HD btw). It did a great job and didn't leave any swirls in the wood. It was comfortable in my big hands and the dust collection was as good as can be expected from a palm style sander. The hook and loop made it easy to change the 8 hole pads and I like the option of having a variable speed dial even though I haven't had a project that requires it. Rubber over the switch keeps the sawdust out, but most sanders have that these days. I'm hoping to hook this up to a two stage shop vac so I can use it inside, so I like that it has that option. This tool is competitively priced for a variable speed orbit sander in its class. Regarding performance, it wasn't anything spectacular. Don't get me wrong, it did a great job; however, there was no noticeable difference in performance verses the old $30 Porter Cable orbit sander it replaced (it has a frayed cord and is missing the dust bag). Since it's Dewalt though, I suspect it will outlast my Porter Cable.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great sander- vac attach not so much. This is a great sander but just can't figure how you advertise it being vac compatible when nothing fits it. I have Dewalt variable speed router that hooks to shop vac no problem....why not make these units standard? Had to rig my own set up , never too happy when it involves tape. Once set up absolutely no dust gets airborne. Lack of actual vac attach is only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5.

My Porter cable sander was a great sander but I wore the life out of it so when I bought a new sander I decided to give Dewalt's sander a try , I have a Dewalt drill that I have been using for many years so I figured there sander would be a good tool to and I am pleased with it's performance , I made a good choice. Rated 2 out of 5 by from No dust port attachment!! I do a lot of cabinet work so a hand sander is a big part of preparation for finishing. I had a single speed Dewalt and used it for years until it quit. One drawback on my older Dewalt was the Vacuum dust attachment was weak. It worked but would become detached. I was given this as a replacement for that sander. Key failure here is the dust port attachment. That cloth boot is useful if you only have a small sanding to do but is too little for bigger jobs. I used it w the cloth boot and within 3 minutes dust is all blowing out from the side area. I tried to attach it to my dust extraction system and the port is not designed to attach a hose therefore it will not hold. This is headed back to HD for a refund. It sands fine which is the sad part. If Dewalt had any common sense they would have molded the dust port a little different and this would allow a vacuum to attach.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Random Orbital Sander I have used this sander for several projects since my recent purchase. It has worked flawlessly for wood and fiberglass projects. I have rated it as good with 4 stars for two reasons. 1) If you have small hands, you may experience fatigue if using for extend periods of time. The hand hold is rather large 2) My second reason for knocking one star off has nothing to do with the tool itself. I ordered on-line to pick up at the store. Got the sander home only to find the plastic exhaust port was crushed. HD exchanged it with no trouble. Just a hassle taking it back. Overall I highly recommend the sander for very professional results.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Turns On and Off By Itself Used the sander for about 2 hours and now it turns on and off by itself. Perhaps I bought a defective unit. Love the feel and performance compared to my Ryobi. I think I am going to trade it in for a Bosch. They seem to have better reviews.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works like you'd expect - it's a DeWalt We all know - an orbital sander is an orbital sander and this is just that. But, it's a DeWalt - it is light weight, quiet, and it is tireless. I use it prior to staining or painting of my woodworking projectes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great homeowner tool Bought specifically to do my Corian counter tops. Did a great job as far as I'm concerned. Also bought the shop vac adapter to collect dust. It worked OK. Still a lot of dust , especially in the HVAC filters afterward. Note that to use the adaptor you need to remove existing hose attachment, stick hose into the adapter, and duct tape around it to seal. You can put it back to normal by reversing the procedure. If you use that setup a lot you may want to get an extra hose to have one for both uses. I bought the sander from Home Depot and a sanding kit from solidsurface and saved over $300 off dealer's quote. So yeah I'm satisfied.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from There's no vacuum attachment adapter, despite what the description and owners manual says. As a professional tradesman with over 30 years of experience, I often choose Dewalt power tools for their design and durability. However, this orbital sander has been a big disappointment due to the design of the exhaust port which does not allow for the attachment of a standard 1-1/4" vacuum hose connector. If like me, you find yourself sanding for extended periods, you know that the little dust boot supplied just doesn't cut it. You need a vacuum attached to handle the large amount of dust produced. Both the product description and the owners manual (which I had to source on-line since it was missing from the sealed box) make reference to vacuum connection. But after researching the DeWalt website, I couldn't find an adapter for this sander. Called Dewalt customer service and they couldn't find one either, so they gave me the number to my local Dewalt factory authorized service center. They couldn't find one in their database, so they called the east coast headquarters, and they couldn't find one. Apparently, it doesn't exist. I suspect there may be one forthcoming, but not yet available. Also, judging by the wording in the documentation and the unique design of the exhaust port, I wouldn't be at all surprised if it turns out that this sander has been designed to only work with the Dewalt Dust Extractor vacuum system. Sorry Dewalt, but I already own a perfectly good shop vac. I'm returning this sander for one that wasn't designed to manipulate me into buying a DeWalt vac. - I'm just speculating about that. But bottom line is that I can't hook up my vacuum to this sander, so it's going back.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Somewhat Dissappointed I just purchased this and got it out thought I would give it a test run. Was a little disappointed. I had an old Dewalt single speed orbital and this one did not take the material off nearly as fast. I was using 80 grit paper at the highest speed and took nearly twice as long the get the material to the point where the other got it. I got this one because I wanted the option to slow the speed down for certain types of material but still expected it work like the other one did.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sander, filter works better than anticipated Easy to use, light weight. Filter captures more debris material than I thought it would. It does require the user to clean the filter bag out periodically, but it kept the dust levels much lower than I anticipated. The price was much higher than other models, but I have had good experience with Dewalt tools.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sander I bought this to replace a Rigid sander that died after two yrs of VERY light use. I have already used the Dewalt more than the old Rigid and it has performed like a champ. I am sanding two Adirondack chairs that I have taken completely apart into 32 pieces. Just sanded 3 solid hrs today and the Dewalt isn't even breathing hard. GREAT sander

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Tool I used it to clean up some peeling paint and wood filler on my cedar fascia. Made a hard job simple and quick. I own three Dewalt cordless drills and they've been great also. Because of that, it helped me make my decision to buy this Dewalt sander. I also reviewed the overall ratings for it on other sites and there too it was highly rated.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great purchase I used this sander to sand a flight of stairs that were stained and it plowed through the work. I could use this tool all day because it's so smooth and dampens the vibrations. Variable speed is worth the extra few bucks. Only downside is it should come with an adapter for shop vacs for those of us that don't have a dewalt one. I used duct tape to secure it to my Husky vac. My next purchase will either be the adapter or a 20v dewalt vac.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Dewalt sander is top notch! Dewalt quality and ease of use.... A great combination. If they could make this sandr in a battery operated model I would give it 5 stars. Perfect size for my home project, sand discs attach with little effort and bag is convenient size to keep equipment, extra disc and still have room to store on my shelf.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Palm sander is little, but a workhorse I have bought this sander several times. I do a lot of sanding when I remodel and this one is light and easy for me to use, a female. I can stand and sand all day and never tire it is so light and capable of its workhorse ability. I also have a second one for my helper.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality Product This is my first random orbit sander. It works very sell. The included dust collection bag kept my work area sanding dust free. The variable speed adjustment was very useful for controlling the rate of sanding. It fits nicely in my hand and is easy to control.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Dewalt orbital sander Sanders works very well with the Dewalt quality and reliability. This sander is a replacement for another brand where I could not easily find a replacement base without ordering on-line. I can always find Dewalt parts at Home Depot.
