Rated 5 out of 5Â by SylvesterMarcus Awesome Jig Saw!
I needed a jig saw so I went to the local store, shopped around and then came home and read reviews online. After seeing this saw had good reviews I bought one. I also purchased Bosch blades.
I've been using jig saws for many years and this saw is by far the best I've ever used. The Bosch blades with this saw cut through 1/2" plywood like a hot knife cuts through butter - very smooth and precise operation.
I also love the keyless blade holder - very nice feature (they didn't have that available twenty five years ago when I purchased my previous jig saw).
The saw has a "good feel" to it, it's comfortable to use, heavy but not too heavy, very easy and very intuitive to operate and it's truly been a joy to use. So far I've used it to cut plywood, MDF and 0.626 thick aluminum and I have zero complaints.
I only wish I'd bought one of these earlier - highly recommended. Don't forget to buy blades - it doesn't come with any - but don't get cheap blades.

The tool less blade changer is complete junk. Does not hold blades securely. Works for general material/wood but for harder wood or metal they'll come out every time. Also the blade guide is sloppy. The blades don't stay in the guide groove so consequently there is a lot of blade wandering thru whatever you are cutting. Very hard to get a good straight cut. No more dewalt products for me. Do yourself a favor and pass on this one & go with Milwaukee or Bosch.

At first I thought this was a great deal. It was meant to replace my 40-year-old Craftsman that I put through heck over the years. It finally died when the reciprocating mechanism finally gave up. I was looking for a compact jigsaw with medium power and the DK317 was a good fit, plus it was on sale for $20 off. I knew it probably wouldn't be as tough as the Craftsman, but it should be up to most jobs.
The first few jobs were done with ease. One time the blade came out on its own, but I just assumed I must have installed it incorrectly. Yesterday I was using a coarse blade to cut a soft pine 2x6 in a garage roof repair. I hit a nail and the blade was ripped out of the saw. I reinstalled it and seconds later the blade flew out and landed six feet away. After that, blades refused to stay in for more than a few seconds.
When I examined the blade clamp, I found it was made of PLASTIC! Engineers at DeWalt seriously thought this was a good idea? There was a groove sliced in it where it is supposed to hold the blade. Also, the lever used to open the blade clamp had a similar slice in it from running into obstacles.
I would much rather have a metal screw clamp the never lets go rather than a plastic "convenient" clamp that doesn't clamp.
On the good side, I did like the dial that allowed for setting the maximum speed. This prevents you from cutting too fast for your particular job.
Of course, I threw away the box in a cleaning frenzy, trusting the DeWalt to last at least through the 90-day return period. It didn't even make 10 days.
Do not buy a saw with a plastic blade holder! If you do, save the box. OR, do an online search for"dw317 replacement parts." You are looking for Blade Clamp Assembly, Part Number: 623199-00 for about $10 +shipping. Order 6 or 8 of them, or at least 2, as I did. Fortunately, it is easy to replace. There are two small Allen bolts that hold it to the shaft.
DeWalt: make a durable blade clamp and I'd rate this tool a 4. As for the wandering blade, I don't notice it since I am used to keeping a close watch on saw cuts and make quick corrections the instant it goes off track. Yes, to whole blade guide assembly on this saw is sloppy. Fix that and I'd give it a 5. Better luck designing your replacement for this jig saw.

Rated 5 out of 5Â by idlesalt This jig saw is a MUST HAVE for any woodworker!
I have owned five different jig saws over the last 20+ years, and this on is by far my favorite. It's easy to use, has a lot of power behind it, the blades are quick & easy to change, and the price is reasonable. This saw is great for detailed woodworking or general purpose cutting. It's made the detailing on my woodworking & furniture building much easier. This jig saw is a must have for any woodworker!

This jig saw is very durable and lightweight. The quick change blade changer is a snap to use. I had to make custom cuts on decking boards that surround my pool. Great cutting ability!!
