How do I get the blades loaded?

DWHT10046 retractable knife
Asked by: fred
Push the blade extraction button to the fully open lock position. Then push the blade into the knife while pushing the black blade release button. The blade should slip into place.

Poor design and quality control - blade release button This review is being written 3/11/2017 for the Dewalt brand retractable utility knife with quick blade change feature, model # DWHT10046. On the unit I purchased, there were two defects. First, as noted by other reviewers, the quick change blade release button would not operate, and a blade could not be inserted. Second, the blade storage door wiggled and had a gap between it and the body that was a potential pinch hazard with use. The unit was returned immediately to the store for a refund. I do not recommend this utility knife.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DEWALT DWHT10046 UTILITY KNIFE. I cannot believe this knife was manufactured as a quick change blade and they installed a weak plastic button to depress a spring steel latch to change blades. First of all I purchased the knife for the ergonomic design and the quick change blade feature. The quick change blade can only be changed if you hunt down a torx driver, not a Phillips head screwdriver as should be, disassemble the entire knife and change the blade. Now good luck assembling this multi part knife without difficulty. I am returning the knife.

EXCEPT...you can't change the blades!! (which makes it USELESS!!! I had to take the whole thing apart to figure out how to install the blade. I finally put a blade in and couldn't get it back out without taking the whole thing apart again. Returning it tomorrow morning...

This knife has Torx head screws, T-15, which is uncommon to have on the job site. The blade does not come out fully due to the design and the blade change mechanism only works if you leave the screws a little loose. I have had this product for a month. It does not meet my expectations.

I do not live near the Home Depot I purchased it from or I would return it. First, I find the direction for blade loading to be small and hard to see what exactly they are trying to tell you to do. I had to go on-line to see what they meant. For something as simple as a razor knife this is unacceptable. Now that I know how it is done I cannot get the blade to load properly and then retract completely back into the body of the knife. Because I live over 50 miles from the nearest Home Depot I will just think of the $10 I spent as another learning lesson.

I returned the twin pack DWHT80697D because the DeWalt Carbide Edge blades would not retract. Also, while a standard blade did change easily in the 80697, the little side toggle constantly wiggled. (I know that sounds stupid.) I purchased this DWHT10046 because it is the older model (2016?) as seen in DeWalt videos and the carbide blade DOES FIT into this model. I see that from reviews here, people complain about the black plastic change button on this model. There is a new model of this knife with the new style toggle on the side for $2 more than this one. But, since I need the carbide blade for tile work and I suspect that the new model does not take the carbide blade, I have my fingers crossed this one lasts.

I was always a fan of Dewalt products but this knife just ruined good brand image of Dewalt. Quick blade load would not work from the get go. The blade would not go into the slot. If Dewalt can't make the a simple utility knife, there is no way they can make others better. Big disappointment Dewalt. No more Dewalt products for me.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Good idea, poor execution The quick release blade change mechanism is poorly engineered. Add mine to the LONG list of negative reviews that are entirely based on this one part. Don't waste your money. Buy a cheap one you have to take apart to change the blade, because it'll work, which is more than I can say about this piece of garbage.
