Customer Questions & Answers

after two coats, do I have to prime or can I go straight to reg coat of paint?

I just painted two coats of Dry Lock this weekend on Cinder block walls in my basement. I would like to slap on a final coat of paint and move on to the next project but thought I had better check to see if a primer coat was required. The Dry Lock had some discoloring in areas of the wall.

Although I stop short of calling myself a professional, as a maintenance manager and former property inspector I am knowledgeable of and commonly read manufactures information. I am insulted by the former answer by the "professional" sales associate encouraging someone to buy a primer. If one reads the directions supplied by UGL a primer is not even mentioned. More importantly is the use of and etcher - if efflorescence is present - and a filling compound. Clearly the "professional" sales associate was just trying to unnecessarily add to a sale. It really makes a site look bad when an unknowing sales associates pass themselves off as professionals when they don't even read manufactures recommendations.

Would this work to seal a crack in basemet wall foundation where water is seeping in? And also on exterior foundation?

Asked by: Rakel
For a below grade basement wall of either brick, block or that has either of these and been coated with cement or paint, and has water seepage, when you plug one crack, hydrostatuc pressure from rain will simply push wstee through another weak area in the wall. I found that digging out all i vious cracks to remove loose material (especially the crack where the wall meets the floor, and using hydraulic cement as a parge or "skim" coat about 1/4" thick, stopped the seepage. I coated the area from the floor (and out from the wall @3") to a point @4 feet high. Hydraulic cement is sold at home depot and lows. Look for it in a bag, not the small tub.
