can durock be used for underpinning on a house which has no foundation?

can durock be used for underpinning on a house which has no foundation?
Asked by: gc
Hi gc, I think the two other guys that answered your question missed your point. "...consult a structural engineer" to skirt your house? Seems a little extreme...I'm guessing your house is structurally sound, perhaps built on block piers or PT 6x6's rather than a slab, and you want to close it in, am I right? The manuf. doesn't recommend going below grade with their product, but if you were to pour a small footer to about 4 inches above grade and framed up a wall on top of that to nail the cement board to, you should be fine. Overlap the footer with the board an inch or so, tape the joints with their fiber tape, use aluminum on the corners and parge it. Don't forget an access door and a few vents, good luck.

Can I use the backer board for my woodstove on my trailer? If not what can I use so my trailer don't go up in flames....

Asked by: Tjotj
Are you planning to then install ceramic tile, stone, or some sort of masonry finish surface? If so, great. If not, no. Don't use this product standalone for any purpose other than label instructions, especially where fire is involved. And be sure to wear a respirator. The vapors are harmful while cutting.

I'm adding a 10x14 storage space onto my concrete and block house, and I want to use urock as my exterior frame on a poured (cement) foundation. Would that be ok? Can the Durock take the tropical climate of the Bahamas?
Asked by: Happy
Durock is porous and will not function well as an exterior sheathing. Your thought process is well founded, knowing about the abundance of moisture in the tropical climate and the resistance of durock to rot, however it is not going to resist moisture intrusion. With it's fibrous nature, I would assume that it would actually wick water into the wood frame.

Hi, Is this product asbestos?

Hi, Is this product asbestos?
Asked by: Decorator
No, this is a fiber cement product, primarily comprised of long strand fiberglass and cementitious solids. The dust produced during fabrication is harmful, appropriate respiration is critical, but there are no other environmental/health concerns once installed.

It's obviously designed to limit the lateral expansion/constriction of a flooring substrate, but I fail to see how it does so effectively whilst being so crumbly and weak. The Durock™ screws designed for the board tend to pierce and drive through the crumbly sheet, diminishing the clamping force of the fastening system, whereas the BackerOn™ screws used with HardiBacker™ boards seat flush with the surface and securely affix the material to the substrate. The floor I used the Durock with feels less secure vertically as a result. This is my first time using this material for flooring or wall surrounds, and I am not entirely impressed. If the only benefits of the material is lighter weight and easier cutting, then I'd recommend using HardiBacker™ instead, despite it's difficulty in cutting, toxic fumes (genuine serious risk of Silicosis to contend with- read the label!), higher price, heavy weight and extraneous material handling. When it comes to tile, the backing material is NOT the place to cut corners. This will be my last time using Durock.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Durock vs. Hardibacker I like durock better because it allows the screws to be set in flush, and easier to cut. As long as I don't need the extra stegnth of the Hardibacker I will choose Durock every time. I am usinge these to replace the scratch coat on an exterior stucco job.
