Can these stones be used to cover a brick hearth of a fireplace that we don't use. It would not be walked on or anything placed on it. Do we also need backerboard over the brick first? Can Home Depot install this for me?

Answer:
Thank you for your recent inquiry with The Home Depot. Anything replacing the hearth must be fireproof and would simply follow the same process as laying tile.

Thank you for your recent inquiry with The Home Depot. Anything replacing the hearth must be fireproof and would simply follow the same process as laying tile.
1.Spread an even layer of thinset mortar over the bricks with a trowel. Smooth out the mortar to create a flat, even surface over the bricks, filling in any indentations, grooves or bumps on the brick. This will provide the flat surface necessary to install the tile later. Let the mortar dry for at least 24 hours.
2. Lay out the tile directly on the hearth to help determine the pattern they will be installed in. Set the first tile in the center, front of the hearth and place the next tiles evenly around it. This will put the cut tiles at the back and sides of the installation and provide an even, balanced tile job.
3. Cut the tiles to fit the edges of the installation on a tile wet saw and double check their fit with the other loose tiles on the hearth. Remove all the tiles in the opposite order you will install them.
4. Spread a second, thin coat of thinset mortar over the hearth. Press each tile into the mortar firmly until the hearth has been covered. Let the mortar dry for 24 to 48 hours.
5. Grout the tiles by smearing the grout over the entire hearth with a grout float. Hold the float at a 45-degree angle to the hearth to pack the grout between the tiles. DO NOT DIG. Turn the float to 90-degrees to scrape the excess grout off the surface of the tiles and direct it toward the joints.
6.Let the grout dry for 10 minutes, then wash off the surface of the tiles with a damp grout sponge. Rinse out the sponge frequently until the tiles are clean. Let the grout dry for 24 hours. You can hire a contractor within store level to install from home depot if needed but this is a guide of what you should expect the installer to do during install. We appreciate your business and look forward to serving you in the future. Thank you for shopping Home Depot.

It is recommended that the natural slate is sealed. We plan to use it in a bathroom. Is there a particular sealant you recommend for use on these tiles?

Answer:
There are 2 types of sealers, please see below:
Penetrating/impregnating stone sealers are a no-sheen, natural look sealer that can be water-based or solvent-based, good for interior and exterior applications. Most quality sealers of this type are rated to protect the stone for several years.
Stone enhancer sealers are also a no-sheen, penetrating/impregnating sealer that is formulated to darken, enrich

Stone enhancer sealers are also a no-sheen, penetrating/impregnating sealer that is formulated to darken, enrich and highlight the natural color and beauty of stone products. They will rejuvenate and improve the appearance of worn and weathered stone. Always test loose pieces of stone to ensure desired effect with enhancing sealers. However, they will also darken the color of grout joints. They are, generally, suitable for interior and exterior use, and rated to protect the stone for several years.

Is the Daltile stone by the same name the same product as the American Olean?

I'm interested in the Sunset Glory slate and it seems to be sold elsewhere as American Olean Sunset Glory. Here it looks to be the same product listed as Daltile Sunset Glory. I know these two companies are linked so I wanted to know if there was any difference between the products before ordering (I checked out the American Olean but you don't have the Daltile version in stock to see in person).

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.2 out of 5 by 9 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Naturally wonderful slate! Issue is the not appearance or installation, but the broken pieces really make it hard to swallow the price. Love the natural stone and am actually ordering more, but fear the amount of breakage and having to go back to the store makes the overall experience less WONDERFUL! Home Depot has been great with ordering and assisting! May 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Beautiful tile, excellent service The variation of the natural stone is gorgeous! I was also incredibly pleased with the customer service and low shipping costs. July 17, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by The California Gold Slate is absolutely beautiful! We laid it next to Walnut dark hardwood flooring and it is perfect match. This slate was easy to install, it cut easy on a cheap tile saw. We were careful and able to cut one tile almost all the way through for a heat vent. Thought for sure it would break, but it didn't. We did use some dupont sealant that makes the final look almost wet. Very pleased. December 18, 2012
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by imperial forest, very poor quality I bought 140 square feet of this stuff, thickness ranges from 1/4 inch to 5/8 inch. Surfaces are not flat, with many low and high areas on both sides of tiles. I've had to chisel off many tiles high spot on bottom surface where spot areas were twice as think as rest of tile. I've had to use for some tiles almost 1/2 inch thick thin set and on others 1/8 inch thick thin set, this makes setting each tile an individual effort and completely impossible to apply thin set for entire rows. This stuff reminds me more of shale and not slate. Most of it is very soft and falls apart easily, a few pieces were hard like slate and had a much heavier feel to it. Most if it had cracks and fissures running through, many had many fissures, some of the pieces broke along a fissure while just holding it in two hands (I was standing and walking with the tile to my tile saw and half fell off hitting me in foot). When rubbed with a damp cloth the color rubs into the rag. It seems to me the main color comes from a heavy deposit on oxidized iron, but I even wonder about that as color doesn't go all the way through the tile. It makes me feel that something was applied to tile surface to give it that color style, which would explain the extreme unevenness of each tile as it has a dabbed on randomness look to it. Many of these "rust" areas have fallen off exposing grey slate color below. I would never buy this stuff again and would never recommend this product to a friend. I would had returned this stuff if I had some way of taking back over 800 pounds of tile in a compact car. September 14, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not a great product These tiles look pretty good but are porous and very brittle. I wouldn't even call them stone tiles. Sand stone maybe. It is some kind of layered material that doesn't hold together. Only five tiles were not broken in the box. The equivalent of two tiles were in very small pieces and went right in the trash. The other pieces were at least palm-size and I can use them for my pet tortoise alright. Do not expect to lay these on the ground and walk on them!! March 25, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Buy Extra We had to buy almost double quantities because the quality of the slate was so poor. We did end up finding enough pieces to do the job, which turned out great, but it was pretty inconvenient to have to go back for more slate several times. I'd suggest opening the boxes at HD and picking out the good ones ahead of time, or be prepared to return the rejects. They did take everything we didn't use back, even the ones that were broken. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This was a great purchase! We covered our porch with this slate and it looks beautiful! The multicolored slate adds beauty to the front of our house. We had it installed and it appeared to go on very easy. I highly recommend this product. July 26, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good replacement tile This tile was good replacement tile for a spot on our outside patio that we needed to repair because of a plumbing retrofit. My only complaint is that there were 9 tiles (not 10) in the shipment. July 8, 2014
