Could this be used on thin wood and if so would the hole go through and be clean?

Asked by: cassie
These punches will not remove a clean slug from wood. Rather they will crush wood fibers at their face, then spread the displaced material; causing the wood to split. These punches are solid and will not have the effect of, say, a paper punch. Unless, perhaps you employ a backing die or anvil. To do that your're kind of creating production machinery. What you are looking for, Cassie, is called a hollow punch. Using these, one can make a clean hole in fabric, leather, rubber, plastic, cork, some laminates, and just about anything used for gaskets (to the production of which I think hollow punches were first dedicated). So I presume that like all those films, some thicknesses and species of wood also could be punched. With any of these materials the punched surface must be backed with a resilient material tough enough to receive the cutting edge without dulling it (Like one uses a kitchen cutting board for such a purpose.). And the backer should be stiff enough to keep the punch and film (wood) from bouncing when struck. Keep the hollow punch keen. Maintain the punch perpendicular to the surface to be cut. Strike the punch once. There is little success gained by hammering a punch. If your application exceeds your hollow punch capacity, explore using a die and press setup.

Would these work for punched tin projects - like pie safe tin, etc?

Would these work for punched tin projects - like pie safe tin, etc?
Asked by: APhoenixRising
Pin punches have flat faces. They're for driving pins (Which resemble small dowels.). Likely your tin will crinkle before you can strike it hard enough to create a knock-out (disk of tin removed from the perforation). For ornamental tin art, you'll want a punch intended to pierce the metal. Use a pricking punch or sturdy awl. They can be dressed after wear. Their taper construction will allow you to make various size holes with the same tool by driving it more deeply through the tin (perhaps developing a technique for striking the punch one, two or more times accordingly.) You also can create oblique holes and shuttering effects by holding the piercing punch at an angle. These are good starter tools for laying out designs and piloting your slotting chisels.

Needed to rotate the flail blades on my chipper/shredder which required replacement of roll/tension pins. Per instructions I only needed the 5/32" punch but ended up using the 1/8" and 1/4" to push the pins in. The 5/32 back end is already mushrooming a bit.

Only used two of them and both bent where the ground shaft meets the body. Also that top mushroomed. Did manage to get out the 1/8" and 3/16" split pins. NOT HAPPY

Got home and used the smallest punch to knock the gas block retention pin out of my AR gas block. Punch collapsed on itself the very first tap and snapped clean off when I attempted to bend it. I had read all the horrible reviews and thought maybe they are just going to hard. I'll be gentle. Use a light hammer. No. Piece of junk. Please stay away. Home Depot and Dasco should be embarrassed that this is even on the market. Might as well be made of lead.
