It makes great espresso. There is a learning curve on how to pack the grounds. Use finely ground coffee. The only negative, water pump is noisy and vibrates.

Great little machine that produces an excellent cup of espresso. The only things that I can think of that could use some improvement are the vibration of the machine that causes the cup to move on the tray during operation.(reminds me of the old vibrating table football games) Having to hold the machine down with one hand while installing the lever with ground coffee is also awkward. Hard to really complain though given the price of this machine. You could spend 200.00 to eliminate these little nuissances, but why? So far, so good!

I've started every work day for the last 10 years with a shot of espresso. I've made espresso from stove top espresso pots, portable espresso makers, and espresso makers that cost more than my car. With that said, this DeLonghi espresso machine will give you the best bang for the buck. It produces a consistent brew and is ready to go in just a few minutes. I've made over 1000 cups of espresso or cappuccino with my machine and I've had no problems. I clean and descale the machine with vinegar every few months. The machine uses ESE pods so you don't need to grind, fill and tamp in grounds if you have access to pods. Something that's unique about this machine is that it produces crema (the blonde cream on top of the espresso). A lot of the higher end machines can't even do that! The frothing wand is good, but let it run for a few seconds before you froth to get the standing water out of the wand. If you make espresso often like me, this machine will pay for itself in less than 2 months.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Lbeezy Great little machine
Easy to use, despite super confusing horrible directions. Good flavor and just performs well over all. The only thing I would change was I wish it was like even one inch higher.

The first one we ordered arrived with water in the machine. Returned it to Home Depot and ordered another. The brew basket with handle did not fit properly and would not twist into place, and the espresso was weak. Returned it, not going to order another.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Alper This small poppy make a job.
As retired R&D professional I made side by side test for this poppy and Sirena (Starbucks designed by BMW espresso machine, $500). DeLonghi looks much less professional not so convenient and more primitive (sure, it cost five times less). But it makes espresso and cappuccino “testier”, richer.

We just got our first cups of nice espresso and capuchinno on this machine. You have to follow the instructions TO THE LETTER, so it needs to warm up, you need warm cups, and DEFINITELY need to tamp down the coffee into the filter. The unit is made of plastic, so don't expect a sturdy, heavy weight. It does the trick if you are careful with it. Make sure to hold the unit down when using the tamping device, as you need some pressure to compact the coffee, and just pressing up with the filter without holding the whole machine will not be enough to get a good, even layer of coffee for the pressurized steaming water to flow through. This is the key to good espresso.
Nice crema on both coffees, but we decided to do one cup at a time, instead of using the double spout. YOU control the amount of coffee going into your cup, so be careful to pour just enough for the 1.5 ounces needed in a good espresso. Pour more and you end up with regular coffee, not the strong, aromatic, crema rich espresso.
The frother worked also as expected, and we did a "steam cleaning" by allowing steam out into an empty cup prior to using it to froth the milk container. We used 2% fat skim milk and it came out very nice and fluffy, with plenty of thickness. Be careful also to not use to much milk. The instructions indicate 3.5 ounces, but I would recommend 3.0 ounces as the optimum amount. Be sure to have a frothing container shallow enough to let the tip of the frothing spout to touch the surface of the milk, and wide enough to allow the frothed milk to expand without spilling.

We have had some issues getting good crema on this machine. We are using freshly ground beans from wholefoods, so we are unsure whether it is the coffee, machine or the barista! Don't like the plastic frother on this, but can get around it by purchasing a 6mm stainless steel tip. Other than the above dislikes, it performs as it should, and is good value for the price.
