Can these screws be used to affix decking to a steel frame if pilot holes are drilled?

Asked by: bwolf
It depends on the gauge of the metal. I have successfully used this type of screw to attach fence pickets to a metal gate frame. It's one of those kind you find at a farm store premanufactured galvanized. Its a heavy sheet metal bent in to reinforcing shapes and welded together for use as a horse gate or cow gate. These screws go easily through that without predrilling and hold fast. I built a rolling gate with it about 20 years ago and still works like new and all screws holding well.

#9 x 2-1/2 in. Star Flat-Head Wood Deck Screw (5 lb.-Pack) is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Because you can't rate Zero These screws are the absolute worst. I used them based on the positive reviews and the value. Boy was I a sucker. Value is right out the window as I am replacing my entire deck with Stainless Steel. These screws in my PT deck have broken at a rate of 80%. Tjhey go in for a few days but as you weather the deck you find that the heads start to float. When you try to reset "HELLO" the screw has broken right at the shank/shoulder prior to the thread. These screws are a waste of time and money. If you are building a new PT deck as I was save yourself and just pay the money for better quality hardware as you will spend double the amount of time installing and then replacing.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not performed as advertised I built a shed and last fall (I live in CT) with a small 6'x10' landing at the front door. I used these 2.5" screws to attach the 5/4 PT wood decking to the 2x8 joints below, as well as multiple other sizes throughout the project (all just using a battery powered drill). I just went back this summer to add in railings and noticed a few of the screw heads were sticking up proud of the surface. When I went to tighten them down, they spun freely meaning they had broken somewhere. I quickly realized that about half of all the screws used in the 5/4 were broken just below the first thread, providing almost zero holding strength. These screws had only been through a single winter and the first part of a summer before breaking (although they could have broken last fall) which is not acceptable for an item being sold specifically for "decking" purposes. I will be trying another brand of screw (GRK) for future projects as the extra few dollars is easily worth my time of not having to replace these annually. I'd recommend others to avoid this brand as well.

They catch the wood and drive easily and don't strip out like regular Phillips head screws. The galvanization helps to keep it from rusting. Perfect wood screw for outdoors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Used for shelving Worked out great, just what I needed to finish up the shelves in my garage. Not a one stripped out either, and no bad ones.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from do NOT buy this junk. do NOT buy this junk. Buy stainless I bought boxes of this junk to make my fence. I think I am building it again for the 3rd time. The screws have broken multiple times. I have boards that out of 6 screws, 5 are broken. I replaced the screws before with some of the leftovers I had. I brought a bunch of broken screws back to Home Depot to get a refund so I can buy stainless (about the same cost) but was told that I have to deal with the manufacturer since I bought 3 months ago. The fence is barely a year old. Can you imagine if I actually used the screws to make a deck?? I used different size screws but only chose to rate this one. They were ALL horrible and broke.
