What is the shear strength of these screws?

Asked by: Calybuilder
I built a 4ft tall by 10 ft long water tank using 16" oc studs with 2 3" #9 Deckmate screws. The force of the water sheered the screws. I rebuilt the tank using 3/8" lag bolts.

I'm using the #9 x 3 inch deck screw. How do I choose the the color I want?

I'm using redish tan screws from Deckmate on my redwood deck but I don't see anywhere in the product description where it states the color. I'm 180 miles from a Home Depot and I would like to order more online.

#9 x 3 in. Star Flat-Head Wood Deck Screws (25 lb.-Pack) is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 62.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Screws to brittle Screws to brittle, The screws are made with a metal that is so brittle the head either snaps off or the threads actually shear off once fully inserted you can't get them back out . Of course if they head snaps off it's not holding anything and if the threads snap off it will be a nail.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great until try to remove Replaced all of the boards on our deck and figured would use these instead of nails to make easier to pull back up. I had to pull up a few boards for various reasons. When I did, over half of the screws broke in half. I can understand a few but not 30 screws and not even years down the road. Highly disappointed!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Screw Removal after 16 years is an issue I am re-decking and removal of the old cedar deck is always fun, I have several versions of deck screws. The old DeckMate ASR - 3" #9 screws are a pain to remove. About 10% are snapping and they are all very corroded. At the same time I am removing some Grip Rite Deck screws also 3" #9 and they are still intact. So they are preferred over the DeckMate. Prior to the removal I bought 15.lbs of DeckMate deck screws. I will be returning them. I concur with the corrosion comments posted on here regarding DeckMate and corrosion, I am deciding between the FastenMaster and the GripRite products. Any collaborative commentary appreciated. I mean 16 years isn't horrible but they are not a LifeTime product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tough heads & great threads! Perfect deck screw. Whether building a deck, or making repairs, this is the product to use. They hold where a nail can't grip, or where nails have come loose. Nothing more frustrating than repairing or refinishing a deck & having to hammer down hundreds of nail heads. That never happens with these screws. They drive in securely, due to the star drive's excellent grip & they stay in place. And, using these quality star screws, can make future repairs easier. Trying to pry out a deck nail can often ruin other boards, where these screws will back out years after installation. Just a plain ole great product. And, yes, they are expensive and, yes, 2 or 3 in the box may have so much coating on them that they are unusable. Still better than nails and they go in where phillips & flat head screws won't!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Weak screws Do not buy these screws if you want good quality screws. Im building a NICE fence thought i was using really good screws turns out these screws BREAK real easy. I screwed two pieces of 2*4 together went to remove screws a week later three out 15-20 snapped just slowly backing out of 2*4s. I really could not believe it. I've spent 130 bucks or so on inferior quality screws . I'm done with about half the fence i have two full big boxes of these 50-60 bucks worth i will not use these anymore PERIOD... There absolutely trash , and now my peace of mind with my fence being built well is 100% gone down the drain. The cheapest made screw shouldn't BREAK period. Here i thought i was using the best materials i could so imagine how stund I am. 1000 bucks and many many pain staking hours I've spent and now I get to know I've used an inferior screw, awesome right? Someone needs to spend some time and learn how to HEAT TREAT metal what a waste. THANKS homedpot
