Customer Questions & Answers

Is chalk paint suitable for kitchen cabinets?

I would like to paint my kitchen cabinets. Is this paint durable enough to use for this project?
Asked by: Red
Unfortunately, the answer is "maybe". In most cases it is suitable but I've witnessed many success and failures when painting kitchen cabinets. The benefit of chalk paint is that you can paint on almost any surface - wood, laminate, formica, etc... But, the success of the project depends on the state of the current finish. In most cases, you can sand your cabinets (rough them up for adhesion purposes) and clean with TSP (before sure to clean off the TSP) and then paint/wax. This is suitable for most applications but there are extra steps to prevent having problems down the road. I just finished painting cabinets for a friend whose chalk paint job began failing after a year. If you have wood stained cabinets I suggest going the extra mile and priming them with a suitable gripping primer for slick surfaces. I use BIN by Zinnser which is a shellac based (white tinted) primer. The stuff is amazing. Do not use a water based latex. Oil based is suitable but I prefer BIN and it's worth the extra cost. It cleans up well with ammonia although stains can be cleaned up immediately with soap and water. It sands beautifully. It lays down and ultra smooth finish and is meant to stick to glossy surfaces. It is very thin and dries quickly. It is very running due to being thin so be sure you don't overdo it or you will have drips. Also, don't overwork it or overlap strokes much because it dries within minutes. Sand in between coats. If you have any imperfections after priming (i.e. drips on surface) just sand them down. BIN yields a perfect base layer than the chalk paint can easily stick to and helps ensure a long lasting paint job. FYI - don't use an expensive brush when using BIN. Also, wrap it in clear-wrap in between coats to prevent it from drying. Store it in the refrigerator overnight if you plan to re-use it the next day.. Most importantly, the first step is to sand your cabinets so the paint and primer can get a better grip. I start with some 60 grit sand paper then some 100 - 150 and finally some 280 grit to smooth. When painting with chalk paint, decide if you want to brush or roll. If you prefer a smoother finish then use a foam roller. It takes a little while for a roller to become saturated with paint so don't be discouraged at first. If you want texture then use a brush. Lightly said between coats - I use 320 grit sandpaper and 0000 steel wool. Allow each coat to dry completely. Buff the final coat with some 0000 steel wool (final finish wool). Buffing gives it that semi-gloss style sheen. Next, distress. You can sand the edges, use dark wax or do a color wash. Finally, wax your cabinets or apply a coat of poly. I don't like to use poly since it yellows over time. I use dark and clear wax. Also put a coat of clear wax on before dark wax, otherwise the dark wax will make your cabinets appear 'dirty'. Some think it's overkill but going the extra mile will make it last. I've seen several quick paint jobs fail after one year. My cabinets were painted 4 years ago and still look new. I have an 8 month old that is constantly testing the durability of the paint job and it has passed with flying colors.

Americana Decor 16 oz. Yesteryear Chalky Finish is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful blueish gray chalk paint I love this color. I bought it in the smaller container, and want to use it elsewhere in my house, so decided to buy the larger container. It is a very nice gray, that has more blue than green in it. Absolutely love this chalk paint, and it's better priced than the Annie Sloan, etc. paint. The best part is that this brand of paint has the best wax to cover it. The wax is more runny than Annie Sloan and other chalk paints, and it's much easier to apply as a top coat over your chalk paint to protect it. Love this brand. Only complaint is Home Depot doesn't have a huge selection of colors with this, and they don't keep it stocked very well. Don't know the reason why? (Because it's great). Maybe it's hard to keep in stock because everyone's buying it (0: I had to order this online to get it. Excited to paint!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very satisfied First time using chalk paint. Painted a 15 year old dresser and night stand; went from blonde wood to Yesteryear and Everlasting. I'm very satisfied with the finished product. The lighting in my bedroom, where the work was done, was not the best. Be sure you are in a well lit room as your second coat needs to cover completely. Mine is a little thin in places but I suppose that will give it character. Also, the top of the dresser has two coats, I might go ahead and do a third just for protection. 24-hours after painting, it scraped very easily. Not happy with that part. If using the Everlasting (white) you may want 3 coats if you do not want your original wood to peek through. The wax is a nice touch after. Gives just a little sheen to the wood. Give it time to dry properly and be sure you've applied evenly before buffing. I used the brush to apply and an old cotton diaper to buff. Did a great job with very little elbow grease. Purchased two containers of the gray, one of the white and have enough left over to do a 4th piece. Very good value for the money I spent; less than $100 including brushes, rollers etc. I'm happy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Chalk paint! I ordered the Yesteryear color which is a beautiful light gray blue color. I was painting a mirror frame which was originally painted in black ... needed only one coat of the Americana Décor chalk paint, and the one coat provided full coverage. Once the paint was dryed (within a half hour) I applied the clear wax with a brush and then rubbed the wax onto the frame with a piece of cotton fabric and voila! beautiful mirror frame that looks like new! Very happy with the product. Excellent Value ... Paint goes a long way!!! Review the 'how to video' for tips and instructions, excellent source!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Deco art Americana I bought this to paint a dresser and I was surprised that the little can covered all of it and I had left over to paint a coffee table. It went on great gave me the look I want and it's cheaper then Annie Sloan paint. This is the only paint I will be using from now on to paint furniture.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Paint was to thick This was the first time I've used chalk paint and it was so thick and hard to paint with. I had chucks of paint on my table. Next time I'll try to make my own or order off line.
