Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by skater201 I chose this camera mainly because of all the included cameras and the large hard drive. It has helped me make sure my house is safe when I'm away. I especially like the clearvu app so I can look at the cameras anywhere. I had a bad camera but they were quick to replace it, thanks Daniela for the wonderful support. The support was really easy to contact and well done.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Faisal A good surveillance system
This is a good surveillance system for residential or commercial purposes. The system offers everything that a surveillance system should offer. It’s all up to you how you want to configure it to the best of your needs. I experienced no difficulty setting up the DVR configuration and setting its client software, just follow the manuals carefully and you should be fine. The system allows you to record on a scheduled time or when a motion a detected in your preferred zones based on your defined motion sensitivity. If an alarm is triggered, the system can display message on the monitor or send an email to you. You can have up to seven users to access this system. If you want to hide your DVR away from the router, your limit is 30 feet. Each camera comes with a 65 feet cable and you can buy more to extend the cable but your limit is 190 feet per camera. You need an LCD monitor to configure the initial setup. The picture quality is great for objects close to the camera but not very clear at a distance.
It supports mobile applications for all the commonly used smart phones. Remote viewing through Internet Explorer requires an Active-X control be installed. Firefox, Safari and Chrome are also supported. The DVR Client software needs some improvements e.g. When creating a new user, it does not care if the username and password is the same or not. It has no password strength constraints. DVR Client is not MAC compatible. It works with Windows XP, Vista and 7. I used it on Win7 Professional 64 Bit. Included Video Player plays h.264 encoded video files since h.264 is what this DVR generates. Included video converter (AVIGenerator2.0) allows you to convert h.264 to AVI and then playback however you want. Overall, it’s a good system if configured and utilized to its full potential.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Pyro Excellent Resolution, even at night!!
I purchased this unit to replace my 5 year old system. My old system was by a different manufacturer and records absolutely nothing at night. Very impressed by the quality of the cameras and how easy it is to setup and actually view remotely. My system uses dynamic dns for my routing, found an alternative app for my android phone that allows me to access my system automatically via dns, the recommended app does not allow for use of a dns address, at least not that I saw.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by hobo This system is well worth the money.
I bought the 4 cameras version a month ago. Installation was no problem but the remote viewing posed some challenge. Customer Support was awesome in setting things straight in short time. What at first appeared as insurmountable obstacles became rather easy to resolve. I received this second system days ago and can't wait to put it into operation soon. I expect this one to perform as well as the 4 camera unit and thanks to what I learned from tech support I am confident I will be able to put this other unit on line by myself.
I will write another review once I get this unit operational rating its performance. I have no doubt it will exceed my expectations.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by TKill Works good, even better customer service.
Initially I thought I wouldn't be able to set these cameras up to live view while away from home due to problems at&t were giving me but the customer service from defender was wonderful. I got them up and running in no time thanks to Michel.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by reb177 Quality surveillance system with significant issues
This is a complete and quality video surveillance system with some issues that need to be considered before buying. The cameras (4 included) and the DVR (1Tb) are good quality. The 4x 65' connector cables were long enough for my installation, however one of them didn't work (and supplier replaced it for free). The picture quality is great, especially the infra-red night picture. In short, the hardware works great and is easy to connect (except of course for the failed/replaced cable).
The included ‘pro’ cameras can only be placed on vertical walls, not ceiling or base, and the connecting wire pigtails are housed in the base. I had planned ceiling mounts so had to devise a work-around. Fortunately the base has a channel for the cable, but the cables are now exposed (so I had to hide them with cord-hiders). These cameras do not pan/zoom/tilt. If ceiling-mount or p/z/t is critical to your surveillance needs, consider a different system/camera.
This package does not include a monitor. So if you want constant viewing on a dedicated monitor, you have to buy one. I had hoped to avoid buying one by accessing the video/DVR through my network or the internet, but I have yet to be able to do so. Despite following directions, I cannot view remotely at all, even on the network. The manufacturer’s customer service has not been forthcoming with a solution.
Four small window warning stickers are included, though I would have liked a one large sign as well.
The “ease of use” issue is open to question. With a dedicated stand-alone monitor, the software is relatively intuitive and reasonably easy to set up. But, as mentioned, networking and remote viewing are very problematic and yet to be solved.
The user manual is supplied on disk (only). Unfortunately some of the links included in the manual no longer are active. There was supposed to be a webpage that made networking much easier, but the link went to a dead page.
SUPPLIER CUSTOMER SERVICE:
Don’t bother telephoning Defender customer service—you’ll just get an automated message that says find answers on website or email them. On the website, there is a chat function during business hours and I used it successfully a couple of times for different issues (the failed cable for instance). E-mail them and they say they’ll get back to you within 3 business days. For the networking issue, I tried email and they replied 3 days later with a ‘solution’ that didn’t work. I’m still awaiting their follow-up.
This packaged system meets most of my needs and certainly should give the bad-guys pause. I will have video evidence if/when needed (I’ve been burglarized twice in my life at different locations). My needs are fairly minimal as this is a home installation (not a business). You should carefully consider your needs to buy the right system.
FOLLOW UP to earlier review: When I first reviewed this product, I was still unable to network the DVR to meet my needs. After several contacts from Defender (I had to be the ‘squeaky wheel’, but they were ultimately quite helpful), I’m pleased to report that the networking issue has been totally resolved. I can now view the DVR on any computer on my home network, as well as on the internet (with moderate adjustments to security settings). One final note: I saw one reviewer state that you can use browsers other than Internet Explorer (i.e., Foxfire, Chrome). This is NOT true. Defender technical support specifically told me that only IE will work to view their DVR/software.
