Customer Questions & Answers

Can I put LED bulbs in this fixture?

Will LED bulbs work in this fixture without problems?
Asked by: ss
Phillips Par38 Dimmable daylight bulbs worked fine. Make sure to connect ground wire to ground. Some electronics are very touchy about not having the ground connected.

How do you install it?

Asked by: Crystal
If you have an existing outdoor light, this can be installed in it's place. If there is not a pre-existing connection you will need the services of an electrician or local contractor. There are detailed steps in the manual provided for wall and under eves mounting, however those steps do assume there is an outdoor rated connection / box present.

Does this light work with PAR38 LED dimmable spot/flood bulbs?

The manual mentions halogen, incandescent and dimmable CFL...nothing about dimmable LED spots
Asked by: Bogman
Apparently not. I had a very bad issue with mine stuck in the "flash" mode and nothing I did would return it to "normal" function. There seems to be some minimum amount of current draw while in operation that is needed for these to work correctly. I was able to resolve my issue by using one LED lamp and one "conventional" outdoor flood lamp in each unit. With one 22W LED and 1 85W conventional lamp they are working ok. This would have been a "nice to know" aspect before I purchased the unit and I fault the manufacturer for not stating that clearly and not designing the unit to work for 2 LED lamps. Search for "Buyer Beware" to see my previous post about the issue.

Will this work from a dock over water

I want to install this at the end of my dock to discourage people getting on my dock in the dark. Will this work when pointing out over the lake?
Asked by: dave
It is outdoor / damp location rated so I'd say yes. The motion detection might be somewhat tricky when pointed toward "open water".

Purchased 3 units for our backyard to be installed by our builder for a new construction. The units are easy to adjust and as of two months later, are functioning flawlessly. At the point of installation however, YOU CANNOT USE A 120w equivalent LED bulb, but will work with a standard halogen. Upon calling the Defiant 866 phone number, it was explained to me that bulb manufacturing is changing so rapidly, that at this time the light will not support that bulb. It does sound like though, that a CREE bulb can work in the fixture, I however, have not tested it.

We have more call backs from these than anything else we install. Our estimates and invoices include a qualifier that we no longer provide warranty support for these items because of the decline in quality / reliability. The only reason I recommend these to others is that they are all junk so it does not matter what you buy or where. If you get a good one, great.

I installed 2 of these and for some reason they were both stuck in the "flash" mode. Anything and EVERYTHING I did to correct the issue and get them to operate normally was unsuccessful. Just before I was about to rip them off the wall and return both for credit, I tried replacing one of the 2 LED flood lamps I had installed with a regular 85W lamp. That seems to have resolved the issue. Apparently this model / brand is not compatible with LED flood lamps and requires some minimum amount of current draw to work correctly. Presently, each has 1 LED 22W lamp and 1 85W conventional lamp installed and they now function as I expected. If I had it to do over again, I would skip the "flash" function models as this appears to be somewhat useless and detrimental to proper / expected operation of the motion sensors. Length of ownership for both is about 6 weeks. I was disappointed that they are only available in white or black. A bronze color would be a better option and look better with brick. Motion detection range is less than the stated by a large amount but acceptable for my intended purpose.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good stuff but . . . Quick install, easy to work with. Only downer is that it did not like working with an LED spot. The light would just flicker, almost strobe. Had to use CFL spot.

I tried turning the power on and off for different intervals. Called the company for troubleshooting. They said to return to Home Depot depot. Now I have to climb up the ladder to get to the eave, remove, go to store, buy something different, then repeat. Not worth doing something twice. Wont buy Defiant for the next one.

First one had the motion sensor fail almost immediately. Defiant replaced it via warranty. The warranty motion sensor failed almost immediately. The second one lasted a little longer but failed as well. Light just stays on constantly even on the lowest setting. Very poor light.

It's simple, straight forward, and has few surprises, especially given the reasonable price. I especially likes the compact size and capacity for bright LED flood lamps. The 180 degree motion sensing label is a bit generous. I installed one along a long wall with a sidewalk, and it does not detect motion to the sides to the degree implied by the label. It's probably more like 120-160 degrees. The space behind the fixture is shallow. When combined with my shallow boxes, getting the wires and wire nuts to fit was a challenge. With standard boxes, you should have no issues.
