Customer Questions & Answers

CFL compatible

I assume this is the same as the Defiant DF 5716? Same number as the model listed, e.g DF 5716. Nowhere on the box did this thing say it wasn't to be used on the same circuit as a florescent light, motor or dimmer. Fine, no motor, no dimmer, but I am using a CFL. Are they talking about 4' florescent lights with external ballasts or does this include 13 Watt CFLs too? The troubleshooting guide, under "Light stays on", mentioned the CFL. Had I only known.
Asked by: Anonymous
It seems that it WILL work with some CFL's, but not others.

I bought this as a replacement for a sensor that was over 15 years old, it does not work with LEDS, though, and is NOT MARKED as such. Seemed ok otherwise, although a bit pricey.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Mind Of Its Own This unit was intended to control security lights on the rear of my barn (an area blind to viewing from the house but clearly illuminated when this unit trips the lighting). At first it seemed to function properly but soon showed signs of failure to shut off. As winter set in false trips and longer ON times were observed. The colder the temperature, the longer the ON time quickly escalating to ON all night long. The unit often turned on the lights at dusk and again never shutting off. At least twice when investigating in the daylight I found the lights still on in bright sunlight. All attempts to fine tune this with the array of controls and repositioning the head have yielded no changes. Pretty much a waste of time, effort and money.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor quality-waste of time and money I bought this sensor to replace a 12 year old Intelectron sensor that finally failed from years of cold winters. What a big mistake! This sensor is really bad. From night one, the sensor would keep turning on every time the wind blew. This was frustrating and annoying, besides the waste of electricity. There is NO WAY to remedy this condition. Adjusting the sensitivity/range has no affect. I had installed the brown one on my house and the white version on my Fathers house. Just last week after only 10 months after purchase, this sensor failed. It would not turn on any longer unless the motion was within 6 inches of the senor itself. I couldn't believe it failed this soon. So I purchased a different model on Amazon to replace it. It seems the more features a sensor has, the more likely it is to fail. All you really need it a time duration select of 1 minute, 5 minute, etc., test mode, and a range dial. That's it. I will no longer buy my motion sensors at Home Depot, because the selection is very limited. Now I hope the one on my house lasts longer than the other. I can't stand rewiring these things every year! Heath/Zenith should drop this model altogether. It is a loser!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Doesn't work with fluorescent lights! I bought this motion sensor online because of its wide angle of view, but it does not work with fluorescent lights. It clearly says that in the enclosed instructions, but not on the box or in the online information.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't bother Seems like this identical item is sold by both Home Depot and Lowes (just packaged with different names on the box). The one I bought at Home Depot was labeled "Defiant". I had to hire an electrician to install this sensor due to the fixture location. He warned me that he had gotten a lot of bad feedback about this brand. I should have listened to him. The sensor worked great for a day or two, but after that, forget about the motion and variable on time settings. It's off during the daytime and it stays on all night. The motion feature doesn't work at all. Apparently, this is a case where inexpensive didn't work out.
