Do you need a switch?

Could this light be turned on and off with the app? Does it need a switch to activate? I have a house that wasn't wired with exterior lights, and would like to add some but don't want to wire extra switches if I can avoid it. Can I simply tie this fixture into a live line and use the app to adjust settings and also as a switch, without having to actually wire a true switch???

Thanks in advance for any help!

If you need or want to turn off the light, then you absolutely need a switch. We bought this light to replace the old dusk to dawn Mercury light that is hardwired without a switch that a past owner installed over our deck because we read the reviews and thought that we could override the light to turn it off. This is not the case, we have tried everything. If the light is set for motion and it is triggered, you can turn it off but as soon as you move again it comes back on. If you set it to dusk to dawn, it reverts to the minimum low moth setting when you try to override to off. We are really disappointed because this is a very nice light but it doesn't do what we wanted or what the other reviewers say it does. Bottom line, the app will NOT let you override to off until changed again by user. Read Less

Technically, You do not need a switch.
The switch to my light is always ON (I taped it at ON position), which has the same effect of hardwiring the light with no switch. So, it will be working like the smoke alarm, which is always ON.
But, it is better to check the city code, or ask an electrician in your area before you do that.

Not a must. If you have a switch you can manually override it and turn it off. Without a switch it would just be always on / sensing (light and motion). If installed without a switch, you are still able to control the light through a mobile app via Bluetooth.

You do not need a switch if you have a blue tooth connection and can run the defiant app. Through the app you can set up if this light will be only motion activated and the duration it will remain on following motion, or if it will be on from dusk to dawn with dual stages of brightness.
In a pinch, you can always use the breaker as a switch.

270 degrees is 3/4 of a circle...not the 180 degree half circle light fixture I'm seeing here. A true 270 would mount at the 90 degree corner and provide equal light around that corner. Right? I guess I'm waiting for one of those, also with mounting to hang from a horizontal soffet box for the correct pattern.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great security light I did my homework and landed on this security light. Yes it was more expensive but you know the saying. You get what you pay for. It was a great investment. We live on a private property with a long driveway through the woods. I wanted something that was bright enough to light up the entire 70' driveway. I got more than I expected. It is VERY bright! I love the Bluetooth feature that I can adjust the settings without having to climb a ladder..A+! We have it set dim from dusk till dawn (you can even adjust how bright that setting is too) and with the 270 degree sensor even walking around the corner of it brings it up full bright. The app was super easy to set up. All in all I am more than pleased. Great purchase!! October 22, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Light Died Had this light for approximately 6 months. It just completely quit. Test power source, it was good; tried to use the test switch, no such luck. While it worked, it was exceptional. Now it is dead. Disappointed! October 18, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Absolutely stellar! This is Defiant's best. I've tried several different brands of exterior garage lights to illuminate my driveway and all have fallen short. Like this light so much that I ordered a second one, just in case. Will be a shame if Defiant discontinues this model and doesn't provide an equal quality light. Price is a bit high for the Bluetooth feature but is very convenient! September 18, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Bluetooth gives much more configuration optons than switches I have to admit that I thought the Bluetooth would be more of a gimmick that something useful. I was wrong. First, the dual bright mode is available on some of the non-bluetooth models. However, with bluetooth, you can configure the brightness of both modes. This is great for tuning it for a certain location. Also, if you are installing in a very high location, I would consider how often you feel like climbing a ladder to change the switches to your liking. I tried to take pictures giving you an idea of the adjustability of the light. It was easier to show this unmounted. If you mount on a corner, you can cover down both walls with a full 270 degree coverage. In pictures you will also see the motion detector straight out and almost straight down. You can point it mostly anywhere in coverage area. I really like the mounting system. Defiant has done this on all of their LED security lights I have tried. A base the mounts and wires. Then the main security light that screws in place and makes electrical connection via pins. This works well and makes mounting a breeze. The app connecting to the bluetooth is decent and functions well. April 30, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by cool bright white light I replaced an old halogen motion light with this new hi-tech unit. The installation was straight forward. Pretty much the same as installing any other light. The entire unit is made of plastic so be careful when screwing in the base. The nice part of the install was the quick attached base. It came with this super tiny flat head screw driver to tighten the screws that hold the wires but I recommend you just use something else to tighten them. There are no physical controls on the light itself and has to be programmed with bluetooth from the app on your phone or tablet. The application is quite easy to use. November 17, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not worth the $- light doesn't turn off Someone over-engineerd the light such that you cant turn the light off. Someone needs to fix the app so that this can be fixed. August 5, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Bright and reliable This outdoor security light is very bright with its 2350 lumen and the motion sensor works reliably . The actual mechanical and electrical installation is very easy and takes only a few minutes. The default setting for the light is "always on", so first thing you need to do is install the app on your phone or tablet and change the settings. My smartphone is a few years old and therefore won't work with the app as it requires at least Bluetooth 4.0 but it works with my wife's phone. I'm not complaining but I question the need for the light to be set by my phone. I don't fiddle with my security lights all the time, they are "set it and forget it", but maybe I'm just getting old. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Modern Security Light This light is very modern and has technology that makes it very convenient. Through Bluetooth I can change the settings of light without having to climb up to it. Through my phone/Bluetooth I can control the brightness level and set a timer if I want it to be bright for a short time. It's LED Lights are very bright, very efficient on energy, and long lasting. It was very easy to install and the motion sensor has a wide range of motion detection as it detects movement from the front and the sides of the light. Overall I'm very pleased with the quality and modern functionality of this light. Highly recommended. July 27, 2015
