Why won't this device work with CFL bulbs? It works with incandescent bulbs but Obama outlawed those...

CFL bulbs just flicker like crazy and then shut off. I hooked them up last night and the first time they flickered like crazy and then tripped the breaker in the panel. I reset the breaker and then they flickered until they all shut off and one of the brand new bulbs turned brown all around the base. I replaced it with a new bulb and everything just flickered again. I left on for 15 minutes, but everything shut down so I removed the automatic light control devices and went back to controlling the CFLs manually.

Answer:
I have heard good things about Philips dusk till dawn CFL bulbs (with photo sensor built-in). Might be worth checking out. http://www.homedepot.com/s/phillips%2520dusk%2520till%2520dawn?NCNI-5

Some control units, like this one, are designed to work with traditional incandescent bulbs that draw more current that newer LED or compact florescent bulbs. Instead of a mechanical switching contact to turn the bulb off, these use a solid state device that can have a residual "idle current" That is...they don't cut off the current completely. This works fine for incandescent bulbs that need about half of their current before the light starts to glow, but with LED and CFL bulbs, this trickle of current is enough to make them glow or flicker or sometimes even cycle on and off. Just be sure that the light controller says on the package that it works with the bulb your matching it with. This is true of dimmer switches also. A dimmer for incandescent bulbs will usually not dim a LED or CFL bulb, but will make it glow brightly at any setting. I hope this helps Read Less

Answer:
If your using an led or florescent bulb, they flash. These apparently were designed to work with only the old incandescent light bulbs. The exact same thing happened to me!

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice Product and works well with regular, incandescent light bulbs. Nice Product and works well with regular, incandescent light bulbs. Doe NOT work with L.E.D. Bulbs, they will flicker. I purchased a similar product at another store and it broke after a few months. So far so good with this one. I've had it for a month and it works well. I don't want to buy halogen bulbs or mercury bulbs, because they look more expensive and we have theft in our nice neighborhood [they steal bulbs!], so I have to use the regular bulbs that cost more electricity, but they don't steal the cheap ones. Also, this fixture is so small, the thieves do not steal them, because they think the small attachment is part of the light fixture in the faux gaslight sconce on the front porch. October 4, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Poor Quality I purchased 2 of these to use on my outside lanterns. One package was intact; while the second package had obviously been a returned item. I really didn't think anything of it. However, immediately after I screwed in a light bulb the inner ground shell twisted off the two rivets that attach the ground shell. The second controller did the same thing. I returned both items and received a refund. Do not recommend this item. October 20, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by horrible cheap design. spend a couple of dollars more and get a better one. Nothing I can do will face the eye away from the house and if you twist just a little bit too much, the entire metal piece inside of it breaks away from the little metal posts. October 25, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Worst product and still being sold at Home Depot Home Depot should read the reviews on the web about the automatic dawn to dusk light control. Most people hate the product and have for a long time. Guess someone at Home Depot is OK with everyone bring back the product. October 18, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by I had high hopes but it didn't work! The price was right and I liked the design. With competitive products the sensor was flush to the unit which made it difficult to make sure it wasn't facing the wall. Unfortunately this unit worked the first day but that was it. I will be returning it. October 25, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Deal or No deal This sensor is so good, I have to return it to Home Depot. It turn light on soon after I installed it. It should turn on only when it dark and turn off when day light come. October 18, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by poorly made I believe the photocell is poorly made... when I screwed in a bulb the inner ground shell twisted off the two rivets that attach the ground shell. I returned it for credit. Another potential problem is that the direction of photo cell.does not point in the direction of the rising or setting sun and there is no way to correct direction in which it points when the unit is seated. October 11, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by not so good. Does not work very good. Blinks continuously. Lost packaging and can't return it? I do have receipt. October 6, 2016
