I would not trust it to be heavy duty enough for front door security, you should get something more heavy duty for that.

Answer:
The pinhole is simply an attachment point for the knob to be received by the base. This unit is designed to be used on an exterior door for your home. This will work on a security door as long as it fits in the following dimensions:
Knob bore hole diameter: 2 1/8"
Latch bore hole diameter: 1"
Backset measurement (from edge of door to center of bore hole): 2 3/8" - 2 3/4"
Door thickness: 1 1/4" - 1 3/4"

Answer:
You could ........but I wouldn't. This is a lightweight home grade door knob. A hacksaw and about 5 minutes would take the knob off and you could reach inside and turn the lock. I assume that you would want substantial security for a 'security door' and a really tough knob. A knob that would qualify as ' fit for a security door' will not be cheap.

Our door has the hole for the lock about 5 inches from the door edge, normally 2.5 The old one has the rod/plunger longer, two-part, with an extension. We do not want to have to drill another hole, closer to the edge.

You can order the 5" locking cylinder from Defient lock company. This item is not stocked by the local Home Depot. This is common for our area in Florida. JimmyD

Zdene,
I ran into a similar situation on a 50's house a few months ago. I gave up on the 5" and used a plug that I found at Home Depot and re drilled the hole to accept the 2.5" lockset. The plug was designed to be secure, but wasn't as pleasing to the eye.

The name of the measurement you are talking about is 'backset'. That is the distance from the edge of the door to the knob hole.
I searched Home Depot online and could not find anything with a 5 inch backset. You might want to call them.
What you are looking for is available. Kwikset makes one it is 'Kwikset 3014-01 3 CP Security 5-Inch Entry Door Latch'. It can be found online if Home Depot does not

Customer Reviews

Brandywine Polished Brass Entry Knob is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 237.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Defiant Brandywine -- great value! This is my second buy of this make/model. I use them to secure two doors within the house -- they aren't beefy enough for the home entry doors. I've had the first set for over a year of frequent use, it still works fine. The installation procedure is typical with nothing strange about it, appearance is quite suitable, the open/close action and the lock mechanism are smooth enough, and the price is amazingly low. These are very good for my purposes, no complaints.

I noticed right away after installing but I decided to deal with it since it was only for the in-law. After about 6 months of having it installed I finally am forced to replace it. You have to hold the knob in place while you turn the interior lock. Something inside the unit is beginning to fail. Door is used twice a day. Buy a better one, spend the money.

I can't believe I'm writing a review about a doorknob, but this one is the bee's knees! The finish is very nice and it looks like it cost far more than it did. The antique brass color and shape of the knob works really well in our mid-century house. We bought 15 of these to replace all the mismatched doorknobs in our house and I'm well pleased.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Garage, I had to go back to store and purchase Schlage Lockset, which to only 5 minutes to install. By far the cheapest lockset that i have ever tried to install. I didn't even try to return it, I just threw it in the garage where it belongs. I am disappointed in The Home Depot, selling a low end product like the one I purchased. If I had problems installing it, i can't image someone else less skilled then I.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value. This doorknob was easy to install. It has a nice looking finish, although basic in design. (I was matching pre-existing doorknobs so this did not matter.) This is one of the few doorknobs of this design and finish available currently that I could find.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good door key knob Looks of good material quality and works great. The only thing is the screws are visible. Other door knobs the screws are cover by the cover of the door knob. Is easier to install. So far is working great. Can't beat the price. Highly recommend.

The roommate said it was easy to install and that he was very happy knowing his possessions were protected. Also, the price was great too.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Godd Doorknob for price I purchased this knob because it was less expensive than having a locksmith come out and make a new key since i had lost the key for the old one. It was the same brand and model I had purchased before.
