It depends on the aperage of the AC. This unit is rated for 15 amps, and I wouldn't excede that value.

Answer:
The timer is rated for 1250W of tungsten lighting, or 1/2 HP motor. You may be able to run a very small AC, but you'd want to be careful and not exceed the recommended capacity.

I would not use it for a large inductive load like an Air Conditioner or washing machine. The surge current when the device starts could exceed the capabilities of the timer. Household timers are intended for resistive loads like lights.

An issue is that the motor in an air conditioner will have a fairly high surge amperage when the motor first starts to turn in the compressor and fan. I would think you are OK. Read Less

Hi there Noni
This is George from our How-To Community.
Noni you can use this timer with the AC unit that has a mechanical switch and that its within voltage limits of this timer 15A/120V.These plug in timers usually don’t work with the electronic on/off switches. Easy way to check this is by unplugging and plugging the unit back in ON position.

No, it does not appear to have a GFI feature. I use it on a powerstrip with a circuit breaker to control both the inside and outside Christmas lights. 2012 was the first year I used it, and it worked fine.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Resets itself randomly to "12:00" In 2 months time this timer has reset itself and lost all programming 3 times while plugged in and left undisturbed. I reprogram it and roughly 3 weeks later it fails again. The internal battery keeps the display on, it just looses all programmed memory. I will exchange tomorrow and see what happens with another one like it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Unreliable. After reading the instructions, I felt that the programming of the unit was understandable and not very difficult. The unit offers very flexible programming options. I was using this timer to control a protein skimmer in a saltwater aquarium. The draw of the skimmer was well within the limits of the timer. I found that the timer would loose all of its programming every few days. The display would reset to its original 12:00 value and it would need to be completely reprogrammed. It was as if the reset pin-hole was activated. I returned the unit for another one, and the exact same problem continued to randomly occurred. It usually occurred during its off sequence, refusing to turn back on until re-programmed. These random resets made this unit useless to me. I am considering returning to a more dependable but less programmable mechanical rotary timer.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointingly Poor This would be a great value if the darn thing worked properly. Programming is not intuitive and the instructions are terribly written. The unit reset on it's own half a dozen times before it settled down. Even after you figure out all of its programming idiosyncrasies - the RANDOM feature doesn't work properly. if you select RND - it becomes VERY random - often off from the actual programming by 4 or 5 hours. This pretty makes that function useless. I have several of these type timers - with the same features - in other brands. Do yourself a favor and do not buy these units.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Too difficult to program I am a fairly patient person with a good grasp of technology and I found the directions for setting the program very difficult. If you want to set the timer to come on and off at sunset/sunrise, then it might not be that difficult to program. I spent 45 minutes setting my timer so my Christmas tree would come on a 4 pm and go off at 11 pm. Come 4:00 and it didn't turn on. Very frustrating. I removed the plug from the timer and plugged my tree directly into the wall. Now I don't know what to do with the timer because in the meantime I lost the manual. I can't seem to find a new manual online (the model numbers don't match.) I should have bought the cheapest and easiest timer--the ones with the little tabs that are removable.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Performance.Do not buy this timer While it was tedious, it was relatively straight forward to set the time and date. Programming it is so aggravating. The instruction are written so poorly that it is incredible. If you were programming it every week it probably would make sense but when it is done once every six months because of something that causes the internal battery to discharge you will seriously consider throwing it out. As a GE stock holder, I am embarrassed by this product

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This GE Timer - - Is A Winner..... I have used various brand timers, this one seems to be a winner. Programming is a piece of cake (once you understand the steps) I attempted to setup without reading the instructions, No luck... After reading the manual, I was able to setup like I have been doing it for years. The random on/off feature that varies the program by +/- 30 minutes is a must and this unit has it.. I offer a few tips; After setting the time and programming, Hit the reset button and run thru it again (even a few times) It is really easy to overlook simple things such as AM/PM settings. Also the Keep the instructions for future use. (You will need it) Now I will attempt to teach the Wife how to do the settings.... (Guaranteed Argument) I plan to pickup a few more (one as a spare) Very Satisfied with this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from STAY AWAY I purchased this timer to replace a 5 year old mechanical timer. The first one that I purchased lasted a day before it started resetting and not properly working. I took that one back and replaced it with another and the replacement stopped properly working within a week. What will happen is they go back to reset mode where your time and program are completely erased and you have to re-set everything to work. Buy it if you want to waste time and money :)
