This would be a great value if the darn thing worked properly. Programming is not intuitive and the instructions are terribly written. The unit reset on it's own half a dozen times before it settled down. Even after you figure out all of its programming idiosyncrasies - the RANDOM feature doesn't work properly. if you select RND - it becomes VERY random - often off from the actual programming by 4 or 5 hours. This pretty makes that function useless. I have several of these type timers - with the same features - in other brands. Do yourself a favor and do not buy these units.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Womey GE SunSmart Timer in Test
I'm still testing this timer (it's used to automatically feed some pets) so I'm hoping it passes muster) Though I didn't have much trouble with the programming, I did find that, after I had set up 4 feeding programs, that, some of the programs never turned the feeder on. After some checking I found that was because the (off) program never turned the timer off (The feeder requires that the timer turn off for at least one minute or it won't provide any subsequent feedings). I think that issue might be because my programs were not in time-order (the timer should have been more forgiving) but anyhow, after I put all of the on/off programs in chronological order, the timer worked just fine today. I'll give it a few more tests/checks over the next few days before I think I can gave give (4) stars (but I agree with several reviews that if this timer is for crucial functions such as pet feeders, vacation/random lights, etc. then you may want to research other timers).

While it was tedious, it was relatively straight forward to set the time and date. Programming it is so aggravating. The instruction are written so poorly that it is incredible. If you were programming it every week it probably would make sense but when it is done once every six months because of something that causes the internal battery to discharge you will seriously consider throwing it out. As a GE stock holder, I am embarrassed by this product

The dual mode features were especially nice. Being able to set two different time schedules allowed me to controll both the inside and outside lights with the one timer.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by NWNana Too difficult to program
I am a fairly patient person with a good grasp of technology and I found the directions for setting the program very difficult.
If you want to set the timer to come on and off at sunset/sunrise, then it might not be that difficult to program. I spent 45 minutes setting my timer so my Christmas tree would come on a 4 pm and go off at 11 pm. Come 4:00 and it didn't turn on. Very frustrating. I removed the plug from the timer and plugged my tree directly into the wall.
Now I don't know what to do with the timer because in the meantime I lost the manual. I can't seem to find a new manual online (the model numbers don't match.) I should have bought the cheapest and easiest timer--the ones with the little tabs that are removable.

This timer just kept resetting itself to the original settings, so I had to return it.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Nightstalker007 The worst!
This timer is not user friendly! It has seven programs available but it is too easy to set a second program inadvertently (and not know it) which causes Program-1 to not function the way you want it. The on/off override also causes mayhem with the timer. I (tried) to use it over Christmas and ended up throwing it n the drawer and going with the old school mechanical timer.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Georgieporgie Comes on exactly at sunset!
This timer is not easy to program but the directions are good and the display is easier to see than other timers. I've bought dozens of these timers as I install outdoor lighting systems. I pre program the timer using my smart phone to get the exact sunset time. The timer holds the program in memory without being plugged in. There is no battery. It uses a capacitor for energy storage which does not need to be changed like a battery. Take your time programming it. It is a good puzzle and worth the trouble. It is cool when the lights come on exactly as the sun sets!
