I followed the instructions, waited a good while to make sure it was sensing the daylight, and it would never turn off. Useless.

Purchased Defiant CFL Automatic Light Control for dusk to dawn lighting of my entry way. No directions on the packaging other than screw bulb into fixture then into socket. Directions were on the fixture itself in very small lettering. First instruction: Turn Power Off. They mean turn the light switch to off. After following the directions to insert bulb into fixture, fixture into socket, I positioned the photocell appropriately. While the directions don't indicate at this point you should turn the switch to "on," I did. The light went on, and shortly after went off as it was still daylight. BTW, this light is positioned "up" as in vertical, and is enclosed in a clear glass globe. As dusk approached, the light went on for 30 seconds, then off again. A minute later on, 30 seconds later, off. After 20 minutes of this, I concluded that bulb heat was turning the light off, and the subsequent cooling allowed it to go on again. I removed the clear glass globe and the light worked all night, and went off at dawn. Called 800 # on packaging. They suggested I take the lenscap off that covers the photocell (didn't realize it was removable) and also thought that the globe might be the problem. Assured them it was clear glass, and if it doesn't work thru clear glass, what's the point. I placed the globe back for protection the from the elements and went to Home Depot to purchase another control in the belief that the photocell might be damaged. I returned in the afternoon on a sunny day to find the light on. Replaced the fixture, and had the exact problem all over again. Called 800 # on packaging. They thought it was the heat generated by the incandescent bulb. I tried incandescent and CFL to no avail. Incidentally, the package shows that the fixture works with incandescent, CFL and LED. I was told NOT to use an LED by 800 #. In the end, I took both Defiant fixtures back, went to ACE Hardware and purchased a Westek Outdoor Dusk-to-Dawn Light Control. It works as advertised. The package comes with printed instructions inside that address the positioning of the photocell, includes 3 lens caps that allow different amounts of light into photocell, troubleshoots "blinking" caused by reflected or adjacent light, and gives specific wattage for a bulb point up or down in the socket. Two dollars more, but a far superior product!!

These things are junk. I bought a similar device 25 years ago and was thinking the technology had improved since. Nope. Basically the unit has to be in direct sunlight to work. Or maybe you can sit there and shine a flashlight on it. Don't waste your money.

Needed to keep it better lit around the house at night....the street has no street lights. tried a solar light of $89...used it two nights....cloudy day didn't charge the battery enough, so we returned it... Decided to try this adapter so we could have bright light all night long....We just love it....goes on automatically at dusk and goes off at dawn.....we use this adapter with an energy saving bulb.....Had we known it was this easy!...So inexpensive, under $8, that two more neighbors got the adapter too....Now we have a nice lit street, all night long.....Perfect, just perfect!!!

I'm not sure if the people that are saying it doesn't work just don't realize that you can remove the lens cap or what because I've had zero problems with this product. Bought one about a month ago, installed it in a lamppost in my front yard (it has frosted glass btw), and it lights up when it starts getting dark and goes off when the sun starts coming up...

At first the control seemed to work fine.....for a wk or 2. After that the sensor would not recognize light and would not turn off. I did remove the light filter to allow more light in to the sensor....but no luck.
Size is very nice....not too big. Just doesn't work.
