Customer Questions & Answers

Can you cut these plants and root them in water to get roots to plant later in a pot of soil??

Asked by: Cathy
Hello, Yes, Dracaena marginata can be cut and rooted in fresh water and later planted in a pot. However make sure to exchange the water as necessary to keep it fresh while it forms roots. Only leave it in the water until you see root development emerge at up to a ½ “ to 1” and then plant in a good quality potting soil. After planting in the new pot, maintain moderate soil moisture and avoid overly drying but also overly wet or soggy soil conditions. For production here at the nursery we direct stick the non rooted cuttings directly into the production pots with moderate soil moisture levels. Afterwards the cuttings will start to root within 2 to 3 weeks. This method is also an option for you and works well but you can anticipate some yellowing of the older leaves until they start to root. Either way be sure to take the cutting at a point on the existing stem that has matured a bit. Normal cutting size overall from the base of the cutting to the tip of the newest growth is 12” to 15” for a 6” pot. Insert the base of the cutting into the potting media only to the depth to stably support the plant upright while it’s rooting in. We hope this information is helpful!

Top of any has suckered out. What do I do about it? Should I cut it off and if I put it in water will it root?

Asked by: LindaJo
Hello! Dracaena Marginata leaf tips can turn brown typically from one of the following; 1. Overly dry soil moisture content. 2. Over watering which favors root disease development that limits hydration to the plant. 3. Too much fertilizer which can limit soil moisture absorption and can actually pull moisture out of the roots. 4. A temperature extreme from a high heat load or over chilling. 5. The plant may have become overly root bound if you have had it for a while. Try and maintain moderate soil moisture levels ongoing and avoid wide fluctuations. Avoid applying excessive amounts of dry or liquid feed. Optimal temperature conditions are between 65 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. If it is root bound consider uppoting to a 12” size container and use a good quality potting blend formulated for foliage or house plants. If you wish to try and propagate the Marginata, leave at least six inches of stub in the pot when you remove the top part of the original plant. Continue to keep the soil moist, and in a few weeks, a pair of new shoots form to take the place of the old top growth. Thank you for your inquiry!

After a few days, however, a good number of the lower leaves fell off. Hoping that is due to the new environment and that it will stop.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Plants I bought several plants from this vendor and I was extremely happy with the plants. They arrived in excellent condition and were bigger than I expected. I have bought plants on line from other vendors and have been very disappointed. Most of the plants died. I think that they died because the plants were to small to withstand the trauma of the shipping and a new home. The plants from this vendor were well establish and sturdy. I look forward to many years of enjoying these plants. PS - the plants are alive and doing well even after 2 months.
