Direct to stud installation?

I see that in the description this shower base is "direct-to-stud installation", which I assume is why there is a thick foam pad attached to the bottom. So I was wondering if that literally means to attach the base to the studs and that's it? Also, what should be done if the pan doesn't sit flat on the studs? If you want to install the pan onto the subfloor, can you use a mortar bed directly on the foam or should you remove the foam first? Thanks
Asked by: Joe
Yes, you can attach the base directly to the studs. The base has a lip at the can mount your Hardie board or blue board above this lip, allowing the tile (or whatever wall finish) to overlap, down into the base. The walls should be square. If they are not square, you can shim as needed. The base needs to be screwed to the studs, but only in a couple of spots...just to keep it from moving when completing the shower. Do not screw the base to snug it tight to "out of square" studs (walls) will crack if you put it "in a bind". Do NOT remove the foam. If your floor (subfloor) is not level, you can float it level before installation, or you can set the pan in a mortar bed, as you suggest. My subfloor was level, so all I did was set my base in blobs of silicone to eliminated any "noise" between the base and the wood subfloor. This is a really nice base, and relatively easy to install. I had more issues with lining up my 2" drain line (and p-trap) than I did with installing the actual base.

Does this base have a smooth surface or a textured floor? Can you tile the walls?

Asked by: aks2000
Both! The textured floor of the base has a smooth feel to it. The "textured" floor has a smooth "pebble" feel that is easy on the feet, while maintaining a good grip (not slippery). It is not "gritty" like some bases, and it is easy to clean. The walls can be tiled, or any other approved shower lining after properly installing Hardie board, blue board, Ditra Mat, ect. YouTube has numerous videos on several techniques and options. I tiled my shower on top of Hardie board and issues whatsoever!

Does this base require an alcove space of a three wall surround? This unit will be in the corner with two exposed walls. Will that work?

Customer Reviews

Classic 400 36 in. x 36 in. Single Threshold Shower Base in High Gloss White is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Size does matter, I guess. As other reviewers have noted, the size stated is not the size of the actual base. Fortunately, I was working with a clean slate as I had completely gutted my guest bath and I was able to adjust the walls and the shower door to fit the size of the pan. I did have to move the drain, not an easy job, and change to tile pattern that I had planned, but it does look good and it doesn't leak. I worried about cleaning as the pan is a shiny plastic and I don't want to use abrasives to scratch it. I waited 3 months to review the base to make sure that it handled to cleaning without scratching, so far, and to verify that it would stand up to heavy use - a family member weighs 350+. So far it is handling the weight and the cleaning.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Look at details before purchase I had to order this product since it is not stocked at my local home Depot. It says 36x36 but it's not. it's true dimension is 34 1/2x 35 5/8. This is an acrylic shower pan with a solid foam base. It must be glued down with an adhesive, not cemented. Because of the high polished acrylic, cleaning choices are limited. No abrasives and soft sponge or rag. They suggest warm water and soap.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Delta quality This is a nice shower base from Delta. It’s not the traditional acrylic over fiberglass construction. Instead, it has a foam core with a high gloss acrylic finish. The foam core makes this base lighter and easier to handle. The base also gives a more solid feel under foot. I also like the fact that I didn’t get any splinters from any fiberglass fibers when handling the base. The high gloss acrylic finish cleans easily with non abrasive cleaners if maintained regularly. Installation is simple and straight forward, requiring a 36” X 36” square space with straight, square, and plumb walls with a level floor. The PDF file installation guide to the right of the description on HD’s website shows all the requirements for this base, as well as two other sizes. There is a three piece wall surround that pairs with this base, although the walls can be customized with other shower materials to suit ones needs. I would caution against using heavy material, such as natural stone slabs, that require support from the base. I wouldn’t feel confident that the base could support such heavy materials. Other materials, such as ceramic or stone tiles, should perform well because these materials are supported by the walls, not the base. I recently installed a Jacuzzi fiberglass and acrylic shower base costing more than twice this Delta base. After close examination, I found the acrylic in both shower bases comparable. The Jacuzzi fiberglass construction was considerably heavier and rougher to install. I prefer this Delta base because of its value and quality. I have found that Delta is always dependable.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Look at the ACTUAL size. Not 36x36 The shower base does not fit in a 36 x 36 space. I'm not sure why the manufacturer would make it this way because you would inevitably have to modify your shower stall in some fashion. Why not just make the shower base 36 by 36, actual size?? I had to send the shower back to Home Depot. I couldn't use it in my application. It looks great, but I'm not willing to modify my shower just because the manufacturer won't make the right size shower pan.
