Customer Questions & Answers

Is the grab bar / shelf designed to mount tub surround, not in stud, and still support the stated weight?

There is no drywall behind the tub splash wall and therefore the toggle type mounting hardware included must be used, but how would this support the weight and not pull the flexible splash walls loose?
Asked by: the5guy
I'm not sure if it will support the stated 300 pounds without being in all studs, but I have mine in one stud with three toggle botls and it is very solid. I haven't hung on it, but I grab it often and it's strong.

can this unit be mounted after tile has been installed?

Asked by: Joey
Yes, it really is designed for that but you have to remember that to be the most stable, it needs to eventually attach to a stud or brace that is behind the tile and backer board. We installed ours after we updated the shower and placed bracing between the studs where we planned on putting future grab bars. There are fasteners that I am trying right now that can handle a heavy load with just sheetrock behind them but I have not had someone really "test" them yet so I can't recommend any as of yet (there is a large selection in the fasteners section of the store).

Is the dish/platform made of plastic or ceramic? Can it be glued to tile?

Asked by: Anonymous
The platform is plastic. I imagine you could glue the shelf, but it would not support any real weight. It would not be a very good handle.

I have not seen it in any other color than white. You might be able to have another shelf insert made to fit it.

Customer Reviews

Traditional Corner Shelf 8-1/2 in. x 7/8 in. Concealed Screw Assist Bar in Polished Chrome is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 22.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Strong handle, nice design, good shelf for smaller items This corner shelf is surprisingly strong. The instructions called for installation using wood screws into as many studs as possible. I was only able to screws into one stud. The other three screws all had to be toggle bolts, but it is still very solid and quite supportive. while drilling holes into the tile and attaching it to the wall was easy, getting the White shelf on was not. I had to use clamps and wood blocks in order to get the white plastic pegs of the shelf through the steel holes of the handle / support frame. The shelf is somewhat flexible and won't hold heavy shampoo bottles. We are using it for smaller things such as soap dishes and razors so the shelf doesn't deflect. I do like the texture of the Shelf. It is mostly smooth, which makes it easy to clean. The directions don't call for it but I added some caulk around the screw holes in the tile to waterproof them.

I was able to install the plastic insert by laying the unit on my work bench and used a mallet to hammer it in place. Clamps would work also. HOWEVER, what I couldn't do was use the toggle bolts that came with the shelf to install it as there were no studs to screw into. So I purchased "3/16" Strap-Toggles" and I was able to easily install the bolts. Once installed, this is a great addition to our shower.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product, directions stink The product once installed is solid. I had to buy plastic wall anchors inserts instead of using the supplied toggle bolts. Also, the plastic shelf that snaps on the stainless steel frame didnt easily snap in. There is plastic left over from the molding process that I need to cut off with a utility knife. I also had to enlarge the holes in the frame to be 7/32" in diameter. After this it snapped in easily. See the other reviews where people had to use clamps to squeeze the shelf on to the frame - that is what I avoided by increasing the holes to 7/32" diameter.

The shelf is perfect for our needs but the mounting hardware needs to be reviewed because it is difficult to use. The engineer that decided on the hardware needs to try to use it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't waste your time When I built the new shower I very carefully made all the corners 90 degrees for corner shelves. I bought four of these and not one would fit a 90 degree corner and only touch the wall at the front corners. Measurement showed they were 3/16" out of square and unfixable. When I contacted Delta I was told they are not Delta but Liberty Hardware products made in China with Delta's name on the box. I've returned them.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from screws make it impossible to snap shelf in place The instructions are poor, but if using the drywall anchors (rather than screwing into a stud), you have to remove the screw from the anchor, push the screw through the shelf hole, then re-attach the anchor to the screw. Then you have to drill a 5/8" hole and push the (folded up) anchor into the hole so that it opens toward you (so it grabs against the other side of the drywall). That process can be pretty difficult. The not-so-nice surprise is that, once you've gotten the shelf installed, the screws you used to install it are in the way of snapping the plastic shelf into its mount holes! I may have to take a rasp to the plastic shelf so I can get a good mounting.
