Customer Questions & Answers

what grain would i get if i'm looking to sand some floor without scratching it

Asked by: matt
Depends on how much you need to sand the floor. The 220 grit should leave you a nice smooth surface but if you need to get rid of deep scratches or gouges in the wood you'd probably want to start with something coarser, maybe 80 or 100 grit, and work through the grits to eliminate sanding marks.

Which grit should I use?

I would like to purchase this product, but am not sure which grit is best for which job. Can you provide examples for each?
Asked by: LibGal
The grit should be determined based on the stage of your project. 80 grit would be for your first sanding, and go up from there in steps until you reach your desired smoothness. Depending on my project and finish type I go with 80, 120, 220, 320 and 400 grits to get the desired finish I also change from random orbital to a palm sander for all grits after 120 grit. I hope this was of some help

I use Diablo 5" random orbit sandpaper with my Ridgid Gen5x 18 volt cordless 5 inch random orbital sander and it works great, I use 100 grit to shape and remove imperfections and then 220 grit to smooth the surface and prepare it for finishing, everything from stain, clearcoat to paint and it always provides an excellent smooth surface for the finish to be applied to, also my Ridgid sander has an 8 hole pattern but the Diablo papers universal hole pattern works great and with it I get excellent dust collection. I have found the Diablo sand paper to be very durable and each sheet lasts a long time which saves me money so I appreciate that! Below are a few picks of projects that I have sanded with Diablo sandpaper before applying a finish to them! Also here is a link to a video of me using my Ridgid sander with Diablo paper, https://youtu.be/mBPiE6NDTTQ

I was looking for 40-grit sanding discs and this is the most aggressive I could find in hook and lock backing with holes for dust collection. The grit was surprisingly aggressive and performed the task of sanding 1/4" off some plywood. I was very impressed with how quickly removed the material and how it held up. I was disappointed in the universal hole location as only 3 of the 5 holes on my sander were left open. It was also very difficult to get the disc centered, in fact, I never was able to and simply used it off center. I was impressed with the Diablo sandpaper, but would try to find it in a 5 hole pattern rather than the universal fit.

Now that I have your attention believe me when I say this, I have I have used a lot of disks in my lifetime and I never thought about using Diablo Disks or any of their products until I popped one of my router bits. My son (Mr. Inexpensive) told me to buy a Diablo bit, to which I never regretted. So when I was looking at sanding disks I thought what the heck I'll pay a few extra cents for the disk...again I have not regretted buying these gems. What I did with Diablo would have taken me much longer and ultimately more money with other name brands, I am a believer.

This was a great product before december 2016 ... but it seems the grit formula changed ... you can visually see the change and the feel it is a bit cheaper... it does not last as long as it used to. I get about 60% use compared to previous year product. I still use it, due to price and its the only one that home depot carries. I generally buy 2 packs of 50 per month of these... so i basically use 100 pcs per month.... even my workers say the same thing about these. For the average person with a basic project, they are great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice quality sanding disc I have used a variety of Diablo products and satisfied with them all. I like the disc with my battery operated a sander. The sander got a workout with this disc and several other grits with 3 different projects. Very excellent results. Diablo manufactures several product lines. I use their saw blades on several tools in my shop. I keep 60, 80, and 100 disc on hand. Good product at a reasonable price

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works fine How do you rate a sanding disc??? It worked just fine. They attached and detached well and vented dust effectively. The grain was even, without lumps that could scratch a surface. It sanded well and lasted a good long time. Seeing as it was 150 grit I did not use for stripping but for semi-finish work. Diablo has consistantly been a high quality product.

I picked this grit size by accident - thought I had picked 60, 120 and 220. Still, slapped them onto a yellow and black variable-speed orbital sander and worked as expected in both wood and metal - getting a homemade wooden patio set ready for paint and a used grill ready for primer, paint and season!
