The Spectra Precision DET-2 is a rugged, cost-effective digital electronic theodolite designed to give accurate angle measurements in general construction applications. Typical tasks include establishing 90° reference lines, checking angles, alignment, and plumb, anchor bolt alignment and alignment of forms, tilt-up walls and curtain walls. The affordable, versatile, easy to use instrument and accessories will increase your productivity when turning angles and setting elevations and lines. The DET-2 is fully customizable for your preferred operating style or job, with programmable settings for the horizontal angle resolution, 90° angle beep, vertical degrees or %, and more. Operating costs are kept low with the included rechargeable battery pack and charger. A backup alkaline pack holding 4 standard AA batteries is also included to eliminate downtime if addition power is needed to complete a job. The DET-2 ships with a plumb bob, NiMH rechargeable and alkaline battery pack, adjustment tools, rain hood, and a hard-shell o-ring sealed carrying case.

Which models of Digital Theodolites have the ability to measure vertical and horizontal angles, as well as vertical and horizontal distances?

I would appreciate any information you can provide regarding a cost effective, and good quality digital theodolite for use in the civil engineering industry. Our requirements for a successful piece of equipment are as follows: The precise measurement of vertical and horizontal angles, as well as the measurement of vertical and horizontal distances. Please note that a Theodolite without the ability of measuring distances would be useless and therefor overlooked by our Civil Engineering Technologist who would be the primary user of this piece of equipment. I look forward to your reply as we are in search of a cost effective theodolite that meets our expectations as soon as possible.

You're looking for a "total station". Digital theodolites only measure angles. A total station is every similar but with a laser range finder and fancy software to crunch the numbers. So it can work off a radius or give you grid coordinates. Now, the standard total station is a two person machine. One to operate it and one to hold the target and costs about $10,000. The second type are the "robotic" total stations that only require one person to operate but cost $20,000+.
